By the age of 11, Kate Green knew how to frame a house.

She certainly knows how to frame a film as she is an award-winning director and producer. Fans know her as the creator, director, and producer of the Canadian Screen Award-nominated sci-fi web series “NarcoLeap,” as well as “Murphy’s Law,” “Melting Stars,” and the list goes on. “NarcoLeap” has enjoyed success with its Writers’ Guild of Canada nominations, and three Leo Award nominations, and a win for “Best Sci-Fi” at Miami Web Fest. This force in the biz continues to carve a path for other women in the industry and was chosen by the Directors Guild of Canada as one of the first directors in Vancouver to write and direct a one-minute film on a virtual LED stage.

The Academy of Canadian Cinema & Television is set to air on the Academy’s Twitter and YouTube channels from Monday, May 17, 2021, through Thursday, May 20, 2021. In the meantime, get to know this female force in show business.

Colleen Bement: First off, congratulations on your Canadian Screen Award nomination for Best Web Program or Series, Fiction for your successful web series “NarcoLeap.” Wow, is this your second nomination? How did you feel when you heard the news?

Kate Green: I was over the moon when I woke up to the news. This is a nomination that our entire team can celebrate in and as the “NarcoLeap” family really pulled together to make this show happen it’s only fitting.

CB: You are a leader in the entertainment business and you work to help create other opportunities for women in the industry. What inspires you to work so hard and keep up this dedication?

KG: Sometimes I wonder if my tenacity is one of my best qualities or worst, but I think I was taught to have a very strong work ethic and that giving up or not trying is really the only failure you will have in your career. I also have a strong belief in lifting up others’ backgrounds that simply just need a partner to get them to the net step. I know what that feels like and I also know what it feels like when someone says they’ll help you. Pay it forward-always.

CB: For those who haven’t seen “NarcoLeap” yet, tell my readers about it.

KG: Kelsey, a college student with narcolepsy, is thrust into a world of espionage when she discovers that during her lucid dreams she is commandeering the bodies of real people across the globe. Known as the Astral Projection, Kelsey soon learns that these abilities are being developed with the aid of technology in an ultra-secret military project. With the help of Agent Miles Kirkland, who is betraying his military masters, Kelsey and her good friend Aidan have escaped the attempts to capture and kill her and are on the run.

In the last moment of the first season, Kelsey discovers that her father-whom her mother Helen had told her left them when Kelsey was a toddler- is in fact in charge of the operation that is creating and monitoring astral projectors (APs). While on the run from the military, Kelsey discovers that she is not alone and there are other young people around the world with her same ability. They are called ‘Trippers’ and use the powers to kill CEOs and boomers who are destroying the earth for profit and power. Led by the charismatic Luisa Vesque, Kelsey finds herself magnetically attracted to Luisa Vesque.

In the thrilling Season two climax, Kelsey is faced with a dilemma: she must either kill her father to save her own life or kill Luisa to save the lives of the corrupt leaders of our world.

CB: Do you have any other projects in the works that you’re allowed to tell us about?

KG: Yes! How long do you have? My company, Kate Green Productions, has a full slate currently of both dramatic and comedic television series, as well as a feature comedy about a Mother and Daughter who try to reconcile their relationship during the Christmas Holidays. “NarcoLeap” is being adapted into a full-length series called “Trippers” and I also have another digital series called “Dr. F” coming down the pipeline.

CB: By the time you were 11 years old, you seriously knew how to frame a house? I am in awe. I was trying to frame a garden bed and failed! Have those skills served you well in your entertainment career?

KG: Yes! My Dad never treated me like a ‘girl’ that wasn’t capable of doing what was thought to be traditional ‘boy’ jobs in the ’80s and ’90s. I knew how to use a skill saw and hammer and nail (no air guns) 2 x 4’s. It may sound like child labor, but I loved it and I think this is where I get my work ethic from. The thing about carpentry is that you have to know where you are going to end up. What is the project going to look like when it’s done? How is it going to be used? Very similar to filmmaking. What is your vision? Who is going to watch it and where? And be prepared to work your butt off!

CB: I read that you met the President of Iceland at his house in Reykjavik. First of all, Reykjavik is on my bucket list. I have to see Iceland one day. Please tell us the story of who this came about.

KG: If you go anywhere in your lifetime it should be to Iceland. It’s beautiful beyond words and you constantly feel like you are on another planet. It was accepted into the Talent Lab for the Reykjavik International Film Festival. At the orientation they announced that we were having a reception at the President’s house the next night, needless to say, I packed something that was passable. It was an amazing, surreal evening and I even got to meet Bjork.
