Originally from Miami, FL, Adam Irigoyen already has a mile-long filmography to boast, and now is playing opposite Hilary Swank in the hot new Netflix series “AWAY.” He plays Isaac Rodriguez who is on the very first mission to Mars. These brave astronauts embark on a three-year mission and have to face the challenges of space as well as leaving their loved ones behind.

Fans also know Irigoyen for his starring on Disney Channel’s “Shake It Up” opposite Zendaya and Bella Thorne. He also had recurring roles on “The Fosters,” “The Last Ship,” along with guest-starring roles on “Major Crimes” and “2 Broke Girls.”

“Away” premiered September 4th and is on the radar of many sci-fi nerds.

Colleen Bement: Nerd Alert News readers are excited to hear about your in Netflix new series “Away.” Tell us about the show and your experience filming it.

Adam Irigoyen: The show revolves around five astronauts who go on the first manned mission to Mars. We follow them and start to learn about what brought them to this point in their lives and the relationships that they leave behind on earth as they go on a three-year journey. The show also follows Emma’s husband and daughter back on Earth and the struggles going on in their lives without Emma. To me, the show was really a dream come true! To work with such talented actors along with great writing and to do it all for Netflix?! I couldn’t ask for much more.

CB: What a beautiful story “Centurion XII” offers, and no doubt audiences will love it. What can you share about this upcoming film?

AI: “Centurion” is a beautiful movie that centers around the world of Mexican horse dancing. The story follows Ellisia and her rise to stardom in that world which is quickly put on pause due to a diagnosis of a rare form of leukemia. She gets through it with the help of her horse Centurion and we fall in love with this horse who has an attitude of its own. I play Francisco who is Ellisia’s biggest competition throughout the movie. He also has his own special connection to Centurion, but I won’t give too much away.

CB: So many of your fans remember you from Disney Channel’s “Shake It Up.” Do you have any stories from the set that you can share with us?

AI: There too many to count, but the first table read that we had for the show is something that will always hold a special place in my heart. I had so many nerves that day, but once we got the ball rolling everyone was having the time of their lives. I remember feeling like I was dreaming, but I also knew it was just the first step in a long journey!

CB: What have you been doing to stay “sane” during these crazy times?

AI: I’ve just started writing more. Also taking this time to learn. Educating myself on a whole host of topics like social justice and economics. I’ve also been watching as many movies that I haven’t seen as I can! Playing catch-up really.

CB: I read that your favorite subjects in school were Math and History. Math happened to be my
nemesis. Can you tell us what you liked about it?

AI: My dad was a math teacher so that might’ve helped. But really, for me, math just sort of made sense. There was always a way to solve a problem you just had to look for it.

Catch the trailer.
