BBC America is starting the new year off with a new series coming Jan. 3, 2021. From the imagination of Best-Selling author Sir Terry Pratchett (Discworld, Good Omens, Nation, and The Nome Trilogy) comes “The Watch.” Picture Pratchett’s Discworld in the city of Ankh-Morport and imagine a police force that allows crime to occur as long as the offender has a receipt. The story starts out with a down-and-out captain named Sam Vimes who has a team of misfits under him that make up The City Watch. This diverse group of characters fights evil trolls, werewolves, wizards, and such while trying to save the world.
The characters are developed quickly and skillfully. The dialog commands laughter right off the bat and it entices the viewers to want to know more about them. One character has a singularly adorable baby dragon that made for a nice weapon as well as a tug at the viewer’s heartstrings. Wendell Pierce brings the character of Death to life with that smooth distinct voice, while the rest of the crew is edgy, inclusive, and snarky. The series is written and executive-produced by Simon Allen, and Pratchett fans will enjoy seeing many of his famous Discworld creations.
