Cosmetic perfection comes at a steep price.

Mark your calendars for September 13th as Netflix unveils its highly anticipated film, “Uglies.” Yes, we know that September 13th is already a big day for fans celebrating either “Supernatural” or “Space:1999,” but more sci-fi goodness is never a bad thing, right?

In the not-so-distant future of ‘Uglies’ societal norms dictate that every individual undergoes mandatory cosmetic surgery at the age of 16 to attain a standardized version of beauty. This dystopian mandate promises to elevate citizens from their “ugly” selves to a flawless ideal, creating a world where conformity reigns supreme and individuality is stifled. The film, directed by the talented McG, follows the story of Tally Youngblood, a character played by the fabulous Joey King. Tally is on the cusp of her transformation and is eagerly anticipating her turn to join the ranks of the “Pretties.” However, her world is turned upside down when her close friend, Shay, decides to rebel against the system and flee from the city. Determined to find and save her friend, Tally sets off on a journey that challenges everything she believes about beauty, society, and herself.

Chase Stokes plays an important role in Tally’s journey. Alongside him, Brianne Tju, Keith Powers, Laverne Cox, Charmin Lee, and Jan Luis Castellanos bring depth and diversity to the supporting roles, enhancing the film’s rich narrative. “Uglies” is based on the young adult novel by Scott Westerfeld, which has posed provocative questions about beauty and conformity. The film adaptation looks promising.
