Denver’s Civic Center Park area was alive with art last weekend, Oct. 4-6, 2024. The Annual áyA Con took over the historic McNichols Civic Center Building with its love for art and nerd culture.  There was such a warm and friendly vibe throughout the entire weekend. An indigenous comic con, áyA Con celebrated all things nerdy such as informative and fun panels, crafting, and live performances. It had this beautiful vendor room filled with the most amazing and unique artwork such as jewelry, posters, comics, native foods, and more. There was also a cosplay contest that offered prizes of up to $500 and MeowWolf tickets!

Throughout the weekend there was always something to explore. Activities included panels on everything from designing creatures for the multiverse, and art making, to surviving the Zombie Apocalypse Rez Style! People gathered outside to enjoy performances by indigenous performers like the Rocky Mountain Indigenous Dancers, and bands like Cherokee Social, Dead Pioneers, 2mx2, and others.

Although the event was small, it had everything one would expect from a comic con and even some things you wouldn’t–like a legit fashion show! The Futurism Fashion Showcase was a night to remember. áyA Con’s premier fashion event featured the theme “Stories Reimagined” and the designers were incredibly talented. The models all did a very nice job showing off the gorgeous fashions and everyone had a great time. There was live music and even an amazing drag performance from The Indigenous Haus of Barbie.

áyA Con was free to attend and and Denverites are looking forward to checking it out again next year. Feel free to donate to show support for their community and their love of art.
