The wait is finally over! Season 2 of “The Last of Us” premieres this Sunday, April 13th, at 9 PM ET on Max. After the groundbreaking success of the first season, which captivated both longtime fans of the game and new viewers alike, expectations are sky-high for what’s to come. As we gear up for the return of Joel and Ellie’s journey, we’ve got some exciting interviews on the horizon. In the meantime, let’s take a look at some of the latest insights from star Bella Ramsey and co-creators Craig Mazin and Neil Druckmann.
Fans can look forward to a shift in the dynamic between Joel and Ellie. During Deadline’s Contenders TV event on Saturday, Bella Ramsey, along with Craig Mazin and Neil Druckmann, reflected on the overwhelming response to Season 1. I don’t think any of us expected it was going to be what it was, Mazin admitted. We were really proud of it, and our hope was that the fans of the games would be pleased and there would be a lot of new people who maybe don’t game but could experience the story.
While Season 1 closely followed the first video game, adapting this next phase of “The Last of Us” presented new challenges. One of the challenges was its scope and its scale, Druckmann explained. In Game 1, we were able to get that whole story into a single season; here we had to plan multiple seasons to think about the whole story and where it eventually goes. A major focus of this next season is Ellie’s evolution over the five-year time jump. In Season 2, I wanted to feel her heaviness a bit more, Ramsey said. I think she’s a little harder, she’s a bit more like Joel … but also she’s still the same person, like she still has the same sense of humor.
There is clearly a growing tension between Joel and Ellie. The trailer shows a powerful moment with Ellie confronting Joel with the words, “You swore.” This, of course, hints at the lingering impact of Joel’s fateful decision at the end of Season 1. There’s definitely some doubt that Ellie has about that lie that Joel told her at the end of Season 1, Ramsey shared. So I think that plays a big part in the shift in the relationship. It’s really difficult playing being cold to him … it’s sadder for sure. And it will continue to just get sadder and more cold … so look forward to that.
With season 2 set to dive into more darkness, drama, and excitement, it brings exciting new cast members including Catherine O’Hara, Jeffrey Wright, Joe Pantoliano, Spencer Lord, Kaitlyn Dever, and more. Who else is excited for this next installment of “The Last of Us?”
