If you’ve been craving a cozy-yet-chilling murder mystery to sink your teeth into, Acorn TV has you covered. Their brand-new series Murder Before Evensong is about to premiere, and it’s the perfect blend of classic whodunit vibes, small-town secrets, and a leading man you will recognize from Hogwarts. Yes, Matthew Lewis—beloved to many as Neville Longbottom in the Harry Potter films—plays the role of Canon Daniel Clement, a village rector in 1980s England who suddenly finds his quiet parish life shattered when a dead body turns up at the back of his church. From there, secrets spill, suspicions rise, and the bodies… well, let’s just say they don’t stop at one.
Based on the bestselling Canon Clement Mysteries by Reverend Richard Coles, the six-part series is set in the fictional village of Champton, where everyone seems to have something to hide. Daniel not only has to help the police (played with sharp wit by Amit Shah) but also keep his fractured community from falling apart. All while caring for his widowed mother, Audrey, and his two mischievous dachshunds, Cosmo and Hilda. The cast has plenty of familiar faces from British TV, including Amanda Redman, Adam James, Meghan Treadway, Marion Bailey, Tamzin Outhwaite, Francis Magee, and Nina Toussaint-White. Together, they bring to life a village that feels warm and familiar on the surface—yet brimming with hidden resentments, rivalries, and dangerous agendas underneath.
And here’s where the drama really kicks off: When Daniel announces plans to modernize the church, the parish divides. Some support him, others rage against him. Then a body turns up. Suddenly, Daniel is not just a man of the cloth—he’s a reluctant sleuth trying to catch a killer before his entire parish unravels. Directed by David Moore (Outlander, Shetland) and adapted for TV by Nick Hicks-Beach (Midsomer Murders), Murder Before Evensong has that perfect Acorn TV recipe: atmospheric English villages, colorful characters, and a mystery that keeps you guessing until the very last moment.

Murder Before Evensong premieres Monday, September 29, exclusively on Acorn TV in the U.S. and Canada, with new episodes dropping weekly. For our UK friends, the series will also be airing later this fall on Channel 5. If you’re already a fan of Acorn TV’s lineup of gripping mysteries and crime dramas, this one’s a must-watch. And if you’re new to Acorn TV? This is the perfect series to start with. Subscriptions are just $8.99/month or $89.99/year, and they’re constantly dropping exclusive gems for mystery fans.
