Celebrate October With Denver’s áyA Con

Come find Nerd Alert News at áyA Con for a celebration of Colorado’s Indigenous comic and art scene.

Looking for an amazing way to spend a Saturday night? Check out áyA Con’s powwow Oct. 4th. The BLACKLIGHT POWWOW is where tradition meets neon and the night comes alive with culture, color, and community! Wear your brightest regalia, and bring your energy — under the black lights, everything shines. The event starts at 7pm and we’re looking forward to checking it out. And there is so much more happening at áyA Con. 

The annual event is Colorado’s Indigenous Comic and Art Festival and it’s filled with indigenous creativity and culture. It takes place Oct. 3-5 at the Truss House in RINO Art Park. It’s a chance to immerse yourself in a vibrant showcase of comics, art, and storytelling by talented indigenous artists and creators. From traditional artwork to modern comics, there’s something for everyone to enjoy. Whether you’re an avid comic fan or simply appreciate beautiful artwork, this event has something special in store. The dealer’s room is filled with handmade gems that you won’t find just anywhere else.

There are activities throughout the three days such as a cosplay pet parade, a cosplay contest that is sponsored by MeoWolf, a ribbon work contest, and special performances by The Social System, Cherokee Social, Jon Rubio, Lobatomy, 2MX2, and Melissa Ivey. Special guests include Rashaad Santiag, Afua Richardson, and Danielle Boyer. Panels are fascinating and informative and this year topics include “Crafting the Unseen and Deconstructing the Monster,” “Myth, Memory, and the Multiverse: Merging An Ancestral Stories with Sci-Fi and Afro Futurism,” and “Voices of the Future: Indigenous Futurism Through Robotics.”

And our favorite event of last year, the fashion show! This year’s theme is called the Futurism Fashion Showcase: RECLAMATION. It challenges designers to revisit the past, reimagine materials, and reassert ownership over stories, styles, and spaces. It’s more than style, it’s a statement that the power of design to reclaim identity, honor culture, and push sustainability forward. It includes streetwear and breathtaking fine fashion that lights up the runway. We attended last year and it was an absolute blast! Sip on mocktails, dress in your finest, and the grand finale will be a show-stopping Two-Spirit drag performance that will bring the house down.
