After years of building momentum and carving out their place in the pop-punk scene, When The Sun Sets have officially announced their debut album, The Cards We’re Dealt, set to arrive on May 21st. The band shared that the project has been more than two years in the making, shaped by over 100 live shows and culminating in a 10 track collection they feel truly defines who they are.
They went on to explain that at its core, the album leans heavily into their ongoing focus on mental health. Rather than just touching on the subject, The Cards We’re Dealt is framed as a full emotional journey, exploring both the highs and lows while ultimately aiming to leave listeners with a sense of hope. The concept centers around the idea that everyone is dealt a different hand in life, and the album reflects the process of navigating those challenges while finding ways to push forward.
That message seems deeply tied to how the record was created. The band described a demanding process filled with long recording days and sleepless nights, but also one that became a form of healing. It’s a reflection of the honesty and vulnerability that has become a defining trait of When The Sun Sets and a key reason their music continues to resonate with fans.
The band also highlighted the collaborators who helped bring the project to life. Producer, Roye Robley, played a major role in shaping the sound of the record, while the album artwork (designed by Apollo) pulls visual elements from across songs to create a cohesive and meaningful presentation. They also gave recognition to a group of artists featured on the album (408, Bluprint, lolitslea, Definitely Maybe, and Latenightsinmycar) further emphasizing the importance of community and collaboration within the scene.
To celebrate both the release and eight years together as a band, When The Sun Sets is planning their biggest headlining show yet. The event will take place May 23rd at Durty Nellie’s in Palatine, Illinois, with support from You vs Yesterday, Flwers, Public Figure, and Hardly.
