“Supernatural” is getting close to its mid-season finale which also means its 300th episode is also coming up later in the season. Last week’s episode was called “Optimism” and was directed by Richard Speight, Jr. Whenever Speight directs, it is easy to catch the new camera angle shots or points of view we don’t normally see. He brought his own style to the episode and as always, it was expertly directed. This week’s installment was not only shot well but was hilarious and showcased two relationships.

We got to see Sam and “other world” Charlie hunt a case about a fly monster (gross), the relationship between those two characters was given a chance to really blossom. The viewers were able to learn about Charlie’s heartbreak, the loss of her lover. She expressed that she wanted to get out of the hunting life. She wanted nothing to do with any of it anymore. Sam was trying to convince her that she was too good to leave. Someone would always need her help and she shouldn’t walk away from what she knows. Weirdly, by the end of the episode, Charlie relented and agreed with Sam after an encounter with the Fly Monster. That whole scene where a level of humanity was brought to a hunted creature was amazing, and definitely something that should be watched. Nevertheless, Charlie realized it might be best if she stayed in the hunting game.

The other relationship blooming was between Dean and Jack. Jack has been feeling useless since he lost his powers and winds up convinced Dean to take him on a hunt. Spoiler alert….they prevailed! They came across a crazy hopeless necromancer (Maddie Phillips) who in the end, wound up becoming obsessed with Jack. Her character, Harper Sayles escaped, but it will be interesting to see how that storyline plays out.

“I need to learn everything there is about sex. Go.”

Jack and Dean had a lot of time to bond. Jack kept reminding Dean that the Michael situation wasn’t his fault whilst Dean kept reminding Jack that he can’t always run towards a hunt. It was quite therapeutic but the episode did end with Jack collapsing after a coughing fit. So the question is what will happen next?

We will have to wait until “Supernatural” returns from its two-week hiatus to find out what happens next. As week keep pushing forward through the season we are getting closer and closer to the 300th episode. Stay tuned for more details. The series returns on Nov. 29th at 8PM on The CW.
