Oppenheimer tops ranking of America’s favorite Oscar-winning movies
As the 97th Academy Awards approach this Sunday, March 2nd, a recent study by gaming platform Rainbet.com has shed light on America’s favorite Oscar-winning movies. By analyzing monthly search volumes for Best Picture winners in the United States over the past year, the study reveals which films have remained most prominent in public interest. I, for one, was a little surprised by the results. Topping the list is Christopher Nolan’s “Oppenheimer,” which won Best Picture at the 96th Academy Awards in 2024. Apparently its critical acclaim and box office success have sustained the interest. It did, after all, win 7 Oscars, including Best Director for Nolan and Best Actor for Cillian Murphy.
Christopher Nolan’s 2023 epic “Oppenheimer” was named the most popular movie, with an astounding 94,070 average monthly searches. Following closely behind “Oppenheimer” is James Cameron’s 1997 blockbuster “Titanic,” which secures the second spot with 77,034 searches per month. Rounding out the top three is Ridley Scott’s 2000 epic “Gladiator” with 49,026 searches per month. If I had guessed, I would have bet the top 3 would have been “Gladiator,” “Titanic,” and then “Oppenheimer.” “Gladiator” because of the sequel “Gladiator II” that came out, and “Titanic” because COME ON, it’s “TITANIC!”
While “Oppenheimer” leads in search popularity, several other Best Picture winners have also captured America’s attention:
“The Brutalist”: A strong contender at the upcoming 97th Academy Awards, this film has garnered significant interest, especially with Adrian Brody’s acclaimed performance. “Anora”: Directed by Sean Baker, “Anora” is another favorite this awards season. “Emilia Pérez”: This French-made, Mexican-set musical has intrigued audiences with its unique storyline and has received multiple nominations. The top 10 most searched Best Picture winners ended up as follows:
- 1, Oppenheimer (2023) – 94,070 searches
- 2, Titanic (1997) – 77,034 searches
- 3, Gladiator (2000) – 49,026 searches
- 4, Parasite (2019) – 34,108 searches
- 5, Crash (2005) – 24,014 searches
- 6, Chicago (2002) – 22,025 searches
- 7, Spotlight (2015) – 20,009 searches
- 8, Moonlight (2016) – 19,120 searches
- 9, CODA (2021) – 15,078 searches
- 10, Green Book (2018) – 14,027 searches
Gabriele Asaro, Head of Research at Rainbet.com, commented on the findings,
“As Hollywood prepares for the next Academy Awards, this data highlights how audiences engage with Oscar-winning films over time. Best Picture winners, from recent blockbusters to enduring classics, play a significant role in shaping film history and captivating audiences around the globe.”
The Oscars air live this Sunday, March 2, 2025 on ABC.
