Andre Colquhoun has a fire within him that cannot be put out. This Canadian actor is known for roles in “The Expanse,” and “Star Trek: Strange New Worlds.” You also know him as Liam Rivera in the hit TV series “Hudson & Rex.” He is also an outstanding filmmaker and musical artist, who created and starred in the musical short film “Short Term.” His filmmaking journey began at a very young age when he created movies and TV shows with action figures, then quickly transformed to putting actors to work.
Nerd Alert News was lucky to catch up with Andre to hear some great stories. We hope that you enjoy the interview as much as we did.
Colleen Bement: Thank you again for taking the time to share with Nerd Alert News. You’ve been in some amazing projects and have such a bright future! Where did you start your filmmaking journey, and, just how fulfilling is it to be an actor?
Andre Colquhoun: Much thanks! My filmmaking journey started at a very young age in my bedroom with my action figures. As a kid, I was obsessed with watching movies and TV shows. Action, drama, comedy, you name it. After watching a movie or TV show, I would run to my bedroom, dump all my action figures out of my toy box, and start creating my own movie or TV show with my action figures. It wasn’t your ordinary “Kid playing with action figures”. No. It was carefully orchestrated. There would be scenes, character development, literally a beginning, middle, and an end. After I was done, I would say “The End” and clap for 3 minutes straight, while giggling of course. As I grew older, my love for wanting to create stories continued. I no longer use action figures, but talented actors including myself. Yes, I’m also an actor and love to act. Even though I was creating movies and TV shows with my action figures, I was also acting through my action figures. So, you can say my love for filmmaking and acting originated together.
It’s truly fulfilling to be an actor, and not just an aspiring actor, but a real working actor. A lot of people think acting is a waste of time and actors aren’t providing anything beneficial, but this is false. Movies and TV shows provide entertainment. Escapism. It’s very similar to medicine and therapy. Not only that, but movies and TV shows can teach us. Teach us to be better people. Teach us to come together in unity. Teach us that the only way to elevate in life is through positivity. This is why I do what I do and I’m grateful I get to do it.
CB: Are you allowed to tell us about your recent projects or is it under wraps?
AC: My lips are sealed. Yes, they’re under wraps. However, I’m proud of them and can’t wait to share them with the world.
CB: My readers would “nerd-out” over some of these shows that you’ve been in. Personally, I think “The Expanse” is one of the best sci-fi shows to come along in a while. You played Ceres Medic. Do you have any stories from the set?
AC: Haha. I agree. “The Expanse” is one of my favorite sci-fi shows and I’m grateful I got to be a part of it. The way this show was crafted was phenomenal. It’s not your typical sci-fi show, but a sci-fi show that’s grounded in truth. That’s what I love about it. And yes, I do have a story from the set. A very funny one. Before filming our scene, the whole cast and crew did a quick rehearsal. In the last portion of the rehearsal, actor Samer Salem who played Josep started posing as if he was a model. Think “Derek Zoolander” from the movie “Zoolander”. And him being shirtless with sickness makeup only made it funnier. I had to slap myself in the face to get serious because we had to shoot the real thing right after.
CB: Can we chat “Star Trek: Strange New Worlds”? You played Probasco in the third episode called ‘Ghosts of Illyria’. What can you share about your experience on the set?
AC: Of course. Yes, I played Probasco, a small role vital to the story. I’m grateful to be a part of the “Star Trek” universe. Being on a set like “Star Trek: Strange New Worlds” was jaw-dropping. Everything was larger than life: the cast, the crew, and the set. Everyone on set was amazing, wanting to create the best piece of art possible. I adored seeing that. It was a wonderful experience.
CB: Is music a part of your life? Do you sing? Play an instrument?
AC: Absolutely. I love music. It’s in my blood. I can sing and play the piano and the drums. In 2020, I created my debut EP “Short Term”. It’s a very simplistic and experimental piece that I’m proud of. I also created a music video/short film to go alongside it. You can listen to the EP on all music streaming platforms and you can watch the music video/short film on YouTube.
CB: As someone who struggles with anxiety, I’d like to ask if you suffer with nerves before an audition or the first day on set? If so, how do you handle that?
AC: I’m never nervous before an audition. Only excited. The reason why is, auditioning is my job. Booking the audition is just the cherry on top. You can’t be nervous while working on the job. You need to be passionate, focused, and in the moment. This then makes being on set for the first time the opposite of nerve-racking.
