In a world where technology continues to reshape our lives, it’s no surprise that the realms of science fiction often mirror our ever-evolving relationship with artificial intelligence. In Robert Goulding’s latest novel, Band of Heroes, this convergence between technology and humanity takes center stage, while music, espionage, and a hint of the extraterrestrial add a unique twist to the narrative. As fans of all things Gerry Anderson, we just had to chat about this exciting new book. Besides, the story involves an alien plasma jelly. Count us in!
Band of Heroes introduces us to Disguise, a fictional rock band with a sound as eclectic as their adventures. Set in the present day, the band members find themselves entangled in a web of mystery when their music experiments are suddenly disrupted. As they delve deeper into the enigma, they uncover a sinister plot involving a hybrid AI lab creation, poised to unleash a new form of terrorism on the world.
The official synopsis reads:
The rock band Disguise unknowingly becomes entangled in a lab experiment of a new type of supercomputer hybrid: a combination of machine, artificial intelligence, and alien entity. Now corrupted by its awesome power, the hybrid wants to be the master over humanity and their world and has devised a way to do so by using the band’s music as a weapon. Disguise receives a last request from a friend to carry out a mission. They accept. Though a separate issue, the mission is connected to the hybrid’s part creator’s own involvement. Their actions combined prevent a terrible catastrophe.
Robert Goulding, the author, draws inspiration from a range of sources, including the iconic worlds created by Gerry and Sylvia Anderson, British and American spy fiction, and sci-fi series. Additionally, the enduring influence of ABBA’s music plays a significant role in the narrative, mirroring the band’s timeless appeal and contemporary relevance. Goulding’s creative journey began with a serendipitous moment while watching a live mixed-gender pop group perform on stage. This sparked the idea that a rock band could become the protagonists in a spy story, blending the complexities of their public and private lives with a dramatic and emotional storyline. As the story unfolds, it reveals an alien plasma jelly that merges with human and musical elements, weaving a compelling narrative that raises critical questions about the power and influence of AI in our lives.
While Band of Heroes may have begun as a novel, its potential to transcend the written word is palpable. The story’s cinematic quality, with elements of espionage, action, and sci-fi, makes it ripe for adaptation across various media platforms. From television series to movies and computer games, the world Goulding has crafted leaps off the pages, inviting audiences to explore its depths in exciting and immersive ways. Independently published, this piece is now available in both paperback and Kindle formats, offering readers the chance to embark on this exciting journey of music, technology, and heroism. Will Disguise triumph over the hybrid AI threat, or will the power of music become the world’s undoing? Dive into the pages of Band of Heroes to find out.
