The 90s: The Last Decade Before the Future now at the Colorado History Museum in Denver

What feels like just yesterday to many of us, the 90s were 30 long years ago and they had a vibe all their own. Back then our world was being reshaped before our eyes. We were on the cusp of a technology that was transforming our daily lives like never before. Can you still hear the static of dialing into AOL to see if you had mail? Did you hope that Beanie Babies would replace retirement plans? Many of us who lived through the time period will rediscover our love for the 90s with a visit to the History Colorado’s 90s exhibit, The 90s: The Last Decade Before the Future.

The World Wide Web was a very big deal, as were Furbys and Beanie Babies. We also thought that the world might come to an end with Y2K! We watched the Berlin Wall come down, had movies on demand in our own homes with Blockbuster Video, owned our very first cell phone, and watched OJ flee down the 405 freeway! This collection of objects was curated from History Colorado’s archives, and loaned from museums, libraries, and private collectors across the country.

What 90s family rooms looked like

Visitors have the chance to see original costumes from movies like “Ghost” and “Saving Private Ryan.” Sports fans will marvel at the memorabilia from star athletes like John Elway, Michael Jordan, Kristi Yamaguchi, Patrick Roy, Kerri Strug, Amy Van Dyken, Wayne Gretzky, and Vinny Castilla seeing up close. There was a display taking us back to what an office workspace looked like, and get the chance to remember that 1992 Olympics Dream Team with some interesting items. And, oh snap! There was plenty of vintage fashion, cool old toys, and long-lost technology that highlighted the trends and innovations of the 90s. The Clintons we represented with Hillary’s iconic pantsuit and Bill Clinton’s saxophone. Some of the displays are hands-on like walking through a Blockbuster Video store or playing old-time video games.

There is just so much to see, and Jeremy Morton, exhibition developer and historian at History Colorado sums it up beautifully: Now that we have a few decades between us and the 90s, we can look back and appreciate just how profoundly the events we lived through transformed our world.
