Charity Cervantes is no stranger to crafting complex, emotionally rich characters. She is one of those rare talents whose presence effortlessly bridges emotional depth and comedic nuance. Best known for her breakout role as Isabel Feathers (and later the entity, Immortus) on the DC Universe’s cult-favorite series Doom Patrol, Cervantes brought a blend of whimsy, vulnerability, and power that made her performance unforgettable. Her work spans genres and platforms, from the biting satire of Strays alongside Jamie Foxx to the teen drama, Teenage Bounty Hunters, where she added warmth and levity as the kind-hearted Hannah B. With a background delving into indie film, network television, and theater classics like A Midsummer Night’s Dream and Pride and Prejudice, Cervantes has carved out a reputation as a versatile performer with genuine range and magnetic screen presence.
In her latest role, Charity steps into a new narrative space with Guacamole Yesterdays, a genre-blending sci-fi, dramedy that explores memory, loss, and emotional growth through an unconventional lens. In the film, she plays Opal, the grounded, very pregnant sister of the lead character, Ames (Sophie Miller), who is navigating the emotional fallout of a breakup via experimental technology. As Ames becomes lost in memories of the past, Opal stays grounded in the here and now—anchored by the physical demands of impending motherhood and the emotional weight of holding her fragile family together.
With a character that serves both as comedic relief and emotional anchor, Cervantes once again proves her ability to embody layered, relatable women who carry just as much grit as grace. In this exclusive Nerd Alert News interview, Charity discusses her initial reaction to the script, the surprising challenges of acting while “pregnant” (prosthetically speaking), and how she and the filmmakers built Opal’s arc together. She also gives us a glimpse into what’s next in her dynamic journey. Whether she’s commanding scenes in a superhero series or stealing them in an indie gem, Charity Cervantes continues to build a career defined by authenticity, versatility, and fearless creativity.

TiShea Wilson: Hi, Charity! It’s great getting the chance to talk with you! Guacamole Yesterdays is such a bold and evocative title. For those unfamiliar, can you introduce us to the heart of the story and your character’s role within it? What’s her journey like?
Charity Cervantes: Thank you so much, it’s so great to be here! ‘Guacamole Yesterdays’ is a story about love and the bittersweet messiness of letting go. I play Ames’ sister, Opal. Opal is very pregnant in the film. While the lead is spiraling through her past, my character is very much rooted in the present, preparing for new life and trying to keep her little family connected.
TW: When you first read the script, what was your gut reaction? Were there any moments—funny, emotional, or surreal—that immediately made you say, “I have to do this film”?
CC: I remember finishing the script and thinking, “This is one of the best scripts I’ve ever read!” I was immediately drawn in by the balance of humor and emotional depth. One thing I personally loved were Franklin’s (Randy Havens) stand-up monologues. The juxtaposition was so beautifully written.
TW: The film feels like it blends quirky humor with deeper emotional themes. How did you find that balance in your performance, and how do you think that tone impacts the audience’s experience?
CC: That balance was part of the fun and the challenge. I always approach humor by playing everything grounded and real. The comedy often comes from truth, especially in family dynamics. I think the tone makes the emotional moments hit even harder because the audience isn’t expecting them. It feels earned, not forced.
TW: Preparing for a unique character often requires stepping outside your comfort zone. Did this role challenge you in unexpected ways, either emotionally, physically, or artistically?
CC: Yes! Wearing a prosthetic baby bump definitely changed how I moved and interacted. I had never worn one before, and having something that tangible to take you out of your everyday being and place you into your character was a gift!
TW: What was the chemistry like between you and the cast or crew? Any standout moments, either hilarious or deeply meaningful, that stayed with you after filming wrapped?
CC: The chemistry on set was amazing. They really felt like a family. I was only on set for a couple of days, but I felt so welcomed right away. It’s such a gift to be surrounded by like-minded creatives, all working together to build something meaningful. That kind of energy stays with you.

TW: Every actor finds something personal in their character. Was there a moment during filming when you really felt that connection, where something clicked between you and the role?
CC: There’s a scene where my character sits down with her sister and gives a little tough love, and in that moment, Sophie (Ames) was such an open scene partner. We were able to build a great connection; it was beautiful and honest. I bring a lot of humor to real-life tense situations and opal was able to do a little of that too!
TW: Everyone has their own way of building a character. Can you walk us through your creative process?
CC: I start with the script, really understanding her world and her relationships. I always bring a bit of me into each character. For this role, physicality was huge – how pregnancy changed her posture and energy.
TW: In “Guacamole Yesterdays,” your performance feels layered—fun on the surface but grounded underneath. How did you approach showing those multiple dimensions of your character?
CC: Thank you! I saw Opal as someone who tries to keep things light, even when she’s carrying a lot herself. She’s the kind of person who smiles through the tension or offers comfort to others when she might need a little comfort herself.
TW: Collaborating with directors and writers can be such a dance. How did you and the creative team shape the role together?
CC: Jordan and Hudson are the best! Jordan is such a thoughtful director. He cares so much about the details but also gives actors the space to bring their instincts to the table. We talked a lot about Opal’s emotional arc and how she could be both the comedic relief and a grounding presence. Hudson’s writing is so rich, and he was open to us exploring, even improvising a little when it felt right. That kind of creative freedom and trust is such a gift for any actor.

TW: You’ve had a really dynamic path so far. Can you share what’s next for you? Are there any new projects that you’re especially excited about?
CC: Yes! I’m currently developing a feature film that I co-wrote with my writing partner. It’s a female-driven, buddy road-trip comedy about two glamorous trailer park besties who risk being kidnapped by a plumber-turned-private eye in order to accomplish their biggest dream: becoming their ‘90s teenage heartthrob’s’ biggest fans! It’s bold, ridiculous, and full of heart. I love comedy and creating spaces where people can laugh and take a break from the world, and this film does just that. I’m so excited to share it! Thanks for having me! 🙂
As she continues to expand her creative footprint, both in front of and behind the camera, Charity Cervantes proves that her artistry knows no bounds. With a deep appreciation for character-driven storytelling, an instinct for humor grounded in truth, and a fearless approach to new challenges, she’s building not just a career, but a legacy of performances that resonate. Whether she’s anchoring a sci-fi dramedy or penning a wild buddy comedy, Cervantes brings heart, humanity, and bold originality to every project. We can’t wait to see what she does next.
