A comic con in a mall? Sure, why not! Colorado Springs Comic Con took place this weekend Aug. 24-26, 2018 at the Chapel Hills Mall Event Center and oddly enough, the venue worked surprising well. The first floor was packed with some of the biggest names in pop culture. The second floor provided a large space for vendors and artists to meet and greet their fans. The celebrity panels were held oddly held at an old Wet Seal store space, yet the backdrop was actually pretty damn cool. Mall shoppers walking by must have wondered what party they were missing.
The “Revenge of the Nerds” reunion panel entertained an audience of both old and young nerds, and the Q&A was hilarious.
Natalia Tena from “Harry Potter” and “Game of Thrones” shared stories about her audition and life on the set.
The entrance to the convention quickly stunned attendees with celebrities close enough to almost touch like “Supernatural’s Samantha Smith, and “Buffy” and “Dexter’s Julie Benz. Just a few steps away were “Revenge of the Nerds’ Curtis Armstrong, Robert Carradine, and the rest of the family of “nerds”. Turn a corner and there were “Deadpool” actor Stefan Kapicic was ready to meet his fans, and just steps away people were chatting with Natalia Tena from “Harry Potter” and “Game of Thrones”, Carl Weathers from “Rocky” and “Predator”, Billy Boyd of “Lord of the Rings”, Theo Rossi from “Sons of Anarchy” and “Luke Cage”, and “The Walking Dead” fans will be treated to Seth Gilliam, Khary Payton, Cooper Andrews, and Kerry Cahill. Comic artists such as Allen Bellman, Bob Layton, Dan Green, Derek Riggs, Ron Marz, and many more were there. Voice actors were a big draw with stars like John Dimaggio of “Futurama” and “Adventure Time”, and “Pokemon” famed actress Veronica Taylor.
The cosplay was always a treat to see. Kids and adults seriously brought their creativity with costumes displaying every detail. Speaking of party, the “Revenge of the Nerds” cast threw quite the comic con after party Saturday night.
Food trucks were on hand outside in the sunshine and offered up some nice choices far better than the usual hot dogs and fries. Vegans and meat lovers all found options.
Overall, the convention was a success. Fans look forward to the prospect of what interesting venue Colorado Springs Comic Con will take over next year.
