David Magidoff is reprising his role as Teddy Reed from “Dexter: New Blood” and Nerd Alert News had the chance to catch up with him. Dexter fans are super excited for the new Showtime series “Dexter: Resurrection” coming out July 11th. Now, let’s get to know David. Born and raised in New Jersey, he had a passion for improv since he was just 14. After USC and the British American Drama Academy, he has never stopped being busy. A familiar face on our TV screens, we’ve seen him on “American Crime Story: Impeachment,” and on Pepsi and Geico commercials. When it comes to comedy, audiences have had plenty of laughs at his hilarious live show “Making Love with David Magidoff.” Those lucky to have seen it where real-life bad date stories are transformed into fully improvised musicals. Recent celebrity guests include Tony Hale, Randall Park, Michael C. Hall, and Tiffani Thiessen—alongside Deborah Ann Woll, Patrick J. Adams, Taran Killam, Rachel Bloom, Abigail Spencer, and many others. His next show is June 6th, so if you’re in L.A. be sure to grab tickets!
Along with “Dexter: Resurrection,” stay tuned for David on a new episode of “The Cleaning Lady.” He is a Fantastic Four-loving, comic book collecting super-talent and we can’t wait to check out his latest Dexter performance.
Colleen Bement: We just have to start out by chatting about Dexter. You are reprising your role as Teddy Reed in Showtime’s highly anticipated new series, “Dexter: Resurrection.” What are you allowed to tell us about your character and what’s in store for him?
David Magidoff: Of course I’m not allowed to say very much, but I am still rocking the mustache. Very hard. So there’s that. Otherwise, I can’t say anything or else Michael C. Hall will come flying through my window at night with a knife and a full box of saran wrap.
CB: What was life like on the set of “Dexter?” We love hearing stories!
DM: It’s a beautiful time. I can’t speak enough about Scott Reynolds and Clyde Phillips the showrunners. Not just because they hired me, but because they are kind and collaborative and clearly have great taste. I was there on Uma Thurman’s first day. Was fun to be in the presence of movie royalty and be reminded we’re all just nervous Earthlings on our first day of work. David Zayas is a total joy. Jack Alcott has become a friend. And Michael C. Hall is the definition of class. There’s a reason why he’s ‘the guy.’ One of the greatest humans I’ve ever shared the lens with.
CB: Let’s talk about your very popular live show “Making Love with David Magidoff.” What’s it like hosting an unscripted live show? Can it be as stressful as it is fun?
DM: It’s a blast. Start to finish. And I love putting each show together. It’s like curating a tiny art gallery. I start with a Tony Hale and then I’m like ok who would be fun to be in the show with me and Tony… And I just go from there. I live in L.A. and my friends are literally some of the most successful artists of our generation. When you get to have both a Rachel Bloom (CRAZY EX-GIRLFRIEND) and a Ryan Lott (Oscar nominated composer of EVERYTHING EVERYWHERE ALL AT ONCE) in the same show, I can only smile. I’m very lucky. Come by June 6th! Tickets at makingloveshow.com. Beer and wine on us!
CB: How did you even come up with that brilliant idea for “Making Love with David Magidoff?”
DM: I’ve been improvising since I was in high school and I just love the idea of falling in love… I’m a softee! So I thought why not interview my celebrity friends about their love stories and turn them into musicals? What’s even more amazing is how many people have fallen in love with this show. It’s so rewarding to create something that really touches so many people. And we all need each other now more than ever, especially being in a real room, with real people, laughing together. It’s special.
CB: What do you love about improv, and what can be the biggest challenge?
DM: Working together with the funniest people on the planet. I was terrible at sports, but I love team stuff. Improv really scratches that itch. And it’s a safe place to be incredibly silly. Tapping into that taps into my child like self. We all need that, and this is how I do it.
CB: Tell us about a comedy pilot that you have in the works called “King David.” I can just imagine how funny that could be!
DM: Well, I’m a Jew who goes to church and I think there’s a lot of comedy in that. I mean my grandparents didn’t think it was funny, but I did! And hopefully others do too. It’s about what connects all of us, even when we think we’re far apart.
CB: I read that you have 4,000 comic books. Oh my gosh! How long have you been collecting and do you have a prized possession?
DM: I do indeed. Since I was 12 years old at summer camp. My prized possession would be my entire Fantastic Four collection. Probably at least 500 comics. I’m a FF fanatic and hoping this next movie is the one. Fingers crossed.
