Ethan Daniel Corbett described his experience on the set of “Headless Horseman” as Just two friends having a good time and taking on the “Headless Horseman.” No wonder there is so much chemistry.
The talented Southern California actor fell hard in love with show biz when he visited his father on the set of the climactic scene in “Galaxy Quest” when they crashed their spaceship at a comic convention. He was hooked, honed his craft at prestigious theatre programs, and has been busy ever since.
Scored by “Friday the 13th” legend Harry Manfredini, this film hit theaters and VOD on Oct. 14th and it is thrilling audiences just in time for Halloween.
Corbett lets us in on the magic of his evil character in this fun Nerd Alert News interview, but before you read it, check out the trailer of “Headless Horseman.”
Colleen Bement: Huge congrats on your new film “Headless Horseman.” What a perfect movie for this time of year. Can you give us a little behind-the-scenes story of what life was like on the set?
Ethan Daniel Corbett: Well first off, the atmosphere of the entire set was one of comradery. We were all in it together. We shot an entire film in 6 days, which is unheard of for a full-length feature. And since 90% of the movie takes place, outside…at night, we were pulling all-nighters for the entire week. Knowing this, my Co-star, Sean Whalen, and I met up at a diner the night before we started shooting in an effort to stay up late in preparation for the night shoots.
Most of our scenes are with each other so we thought we’d go over our scenes and rehearse. By the end of the night, (or should I say morning?) we didn’t look at our scripts ONCE. We were simply enjoying eachothers company and having a good time. I think that ended up building more chemistry for us and you can see it in the film. Just two friends having a good time and taking on the “Headless Horseman.”
CB: Your character on your new film “Headless Horseman” is described as a cold and calculating snake. Yikes! What else can you tell us about ‘Angel’?
EDC: Angel has a very colorful personality to say the least. If you don’t give him what he wants, he’ll take it from you. For people he is involved with, it’s life or death, but for him, it’s fun. He has this god complex that makes him feel invincible as if he KNOWS he’s gonna win. Even when he is face to face with the devil-dealing Headless Horseman, he can’t help but smile. That is scary. Imagine going up against someone that is so confident in their own destiny, that not even mystical powers can deter him. He enjoys the challenge.
CB: Your project plate is filled with films in the works. Are you allowed to tell us about any of them?
EDC: Yes! There is a lot in the works that I am very proud to be a part of. The film “Clown & Out,” directed by Sergio Guerrero, is set to release in 2023. It holds such a special place in my heart. It was the first project I filmed coming out of the pandemic and everyone on set was so grateful to be working again. That feeling and heart really comes through on screen and I am excited for audiences to see it.
I have a short film that I am very honored to have played a role in. It’s a story that needs to be told and I am grateful the director, Sabrina Lassegue, trusted me to take on that role. Currently, I am in production for a feature film called “Death & Life,” directed by OJ Hansen. It’s a film set in an otherworldly domain filled with a lot of fantastical elements, including some new technology that hasn’t been utilized fully on screen yet, that is really going to blow people’s minds.
CB: Nice to meet another CSUF alum. Go Titans! When did you realize that you were destined to a career as an actor?
EDC: No way! Hello fellow Titan! I’ve known that I wanted to be an actor from a very young age. My dad worked for Warner Bros. and he would occasionally bring me on set of whichever film he was working on. I have vivid memories of being on set for “Dennis The Menace Strikes Again!” and seeing Carrot Top stuck knee deep in cement and Betty White being so funny and kind. I remember being there when they were preparing to shoot the climactic scene in “Galaxy Quest” when they crashed their spaceship at a comic convention. I was enamored with the bright lights, cameras, sets, and famous actors. Then, when we would see the movie later in theaters and see how it all came together, BLEW MY MIND. The icing on the cake was waiting for the credits to roll and seeing my dad’s name up there. I knew that THIS was what I wanted to do for the rest of my life. So now whenever I am on set, I feel like that little kid again, giddy with excitement and awe.
CB: I see that you’ve done work behind the scenes as a Director, Producer, and Writer. Do you enjoy writing?
EDC: Yes! I really do enjoy writing. It’s very therapeutic for me. Growing up, I was always teased by my family for daydreaming and living in “La La Land” (I was a very imaginative kid). Most of the time I was just imagining grand stories and playing out wild scenarios in my head. Writing is a way to keep in touch with my inner child and I want to write the types of stories that would be child Ethan’s favorite movie. I am currently writing a feature that means a lot to me called “California Native.” It’s a personal coming-of-age story about what it’s like to grow up in Southern California. It’s possible that production will start for that by next year.
