In a recent installment of Deadline’s Contenders series, Emmy nominees Walton Goggins and Jonathan Nolan sat down to discuss their acclaimed work on Prime Video’s “Fallout.” This show charmed audiences and critics alike. Based on Bethesda Game Studios’ popular video game series, “Fallout” was an instant Prime Video hit that has earned 17 Emmy nominations including Outstanding Drama Series and Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series for Goggins. A Dual Role Like No Other

For Walton Goggins, known for his roles in “Justified”, “The Righteous Gemstones”, and “The Hateful Eight”, the experience of playing dual roles in “Fallout” has been both challenging and rewarding. Goggins portrays two distinct characters separated by 200 years in the show’s timeline: the mutant bounty hunter known as the Ghoul and the pre-apocalypse Hollywood Western actor Cooper Howard. Goggins reflected on this dual role during the interview, revealing how the experience has provided him with profound insights into character development. It was, you know, just a rare opportunity to understand how far as someone has fallen really and … what being exposed to the worst that humanity has to offer can do to the psychology of a human being.

The Dark Humor of ‘Fallout’

Jonathan Nolan, the executive producer and director of “Fallout,” discussed the tone and approach of the series. Known for his work on “Westworld” and “Person of Interest”, Nolan explained how the show balances its darker themes with moments of levity. I’ve always felt throughout my career that you can always get the audience to a slightly darker place if you tell them a couple of jokes along the way.

Per Deadline, “Fallout” has already attracted nearly 100 million viewers worldwide since its debut April 10th, a testament to its widespread appeal and the strength of its storytelling. The series’ success is further underscored by its second-season renewal, promising fans even more of the gripping and inventive content that has made the show a standout hit. The cast of “Fallout” also includes notable performances by Ella Purnell, Aaron Moten, Kyle MacLachlan, Moisés Arias, and Sarita Choudhury, with Michael Emerson, Leslie Uggams, Frances Turner, Dave Register, Zach Cherry, Johnny Pemberton, Rodrigo Luzzi, Annabel O’Hagan, and Xelia Mendes-Jones rounding out the impressive ensemble. Their collective talent contributes to the show’s success.

As the Emmy Awards approach, “Fallout” stands as a testament to innovative storytelling and incredible characters. Goggins’ portrayal of dual characters and Nolan’s balanced approach to dark and light elements underscore the series’ depth and appeal.“Fallout’s first season is streaming on Prime Video.
