Last weekend Comic-Con@Home answered questions while sparking new ones on the new “Blade Runner: Black Lotus” series coming to Adult Swim and Crunchyroll this fall.
Executive Producer, Joseph Chou was looking for a new project after “Animatrix” and “Blade Runner: Black Lotus” was his answer. Toying with the idea to make it into a series, he started reaching out to see if this could actually be a project. Five years later, he had Shinji Aramaki (co-director) and Kenji Kamiyama (co-director) on board. Kamiyama’s reaction was “that sounds unbelievable. We can actually make that with our own hands. That’s great. When do we start?!” There were so many things that he wanted to do with it that “he was like a kid in a candy store.”
Kamiyama also explained that this show falls in the timeline after the first film takes place after a worldwide blackout event where the world has lost most of its power, and the memories that were stored in computers around the world, there’s a massive loss of communication. Between that and the chaos that was a result of it, “Blade Runner 2049” — around 2032.
Series star Jessica Henwick’s father is a huge “Blade Runner” fan and it was one of the first sci-films that she’d seen. She was blown away by how many things were derived from “Blade Runner.” Thanks to her father, she fit right in with the rest of the “Blade Runner” nerds. Her character’s story takes place from the perspective of the replicant that is being hunted. She is a female hero who happens to be trapped in this world and is trying to find out her identity and the reason for the situation that she’s in.
