In an era where indie films often get overshadowed by blockbuster buzz, Guacamole Yesterdays stands out like a vibrant splash of color on a gray canvas—and at the heart of it is actress, Megan McFarland. Known for her versatility across stage and screen, McFarland delivers a standout performance in this offbeat, emotionally resonant film that quickly became a festival favorite.

McFarland’s career spans television, film, and theater. She has appeared in television series such as MacGyver and In the Heat of the Night, and her film credits include Irresistible (2020) and Crime Story (2021). On stage, she has portrayed a range of characters from Shakespearean roles to contemporary productions. Notably, she won the 2015 Suzi Bass Award for Outstanding Supporting Female Actor for her role in Memphis, a co-production by Aurora Theatre and Theatrical Outfit.

Nerd Alert News caught up with Megan to dive into her experience filming Guacamole Yesterdays. From the first moment she connected with the script to the subtle challenges of bringing her complex character to life, but we didn’t stop there. She also gave us a glimpse into her creative process, dished on behind-the-scenes moments, and teased what’s next on the horizon. Whether you’re a longtime fan or just discovering her work, this conversation with Megan McFarland is a testament to the magic that happens when bold storytelling meets fearless talent.

TiShea Wilson: This film has such a distinct and quirky title—Guacamole Yesterdays. Can you tell us what initially attracted you to the script and your character? Was it the story, the themes, or something specific about your character that made you say “yes”?

Megan McFarland: My agent called and said that I had been recommended as a possible Donna and asked if I was interested in reading for the film. She sent me the scene, and I immediately felt drawn to her, so of course I said yes! I felt like I knew her personally.

TW: Your character has a lot of emotional depth, while the film overall maintains this offbeat, almost surreal tone. How did you approach balancing that contrast in your performance?

MM: Ohhhhh, the writing was grounding. And (spoiler alert), Ames has constructed Donna from her memories of incidents they experienced together. She remembered Donna as being cautious, concerned, doing her best to advise but not interfere, and always loving. So that’s the world my character lived in.

TW: Every actor has that one scene that sticks with them. Was there a particular moment in Guacamole Yesterdays that was especially challenging or rewarding to film?

MM: I loved the kitchen scene where Ames and Donna are laughing over an embarrassing story that Donna had told about Franklin as a kid, it felt effortless.

TW: The title alone sparks curiosity. From your perspective, what does Guacamole Yesterdays represent within the story?

MM: Adapting to, and embracing change.

TW: We love hearing about the magic behind the scenes. Do you have any memorable on-set stories or unexpected moments with your castmates that stood out during production?

MM: Randy and Sophie were hilarious! So, a few times I had to really focus on the seriousness of a scene to keep from laughing between takes. They were beautifully paired for this film, and their friendship and humor is perfect chemistry.

TW: Can you walk us through your creative process when preparing for this role?

MM: I read the script several times, searching for what, within myself, was relatable to my character and then began memorizing and letting her voice take shape — knowing everything would transform when the other actors’ voices gave life to the relationships.

TW: How did your collaboration with the director influence your performance in this film? Were there any specific notes, insights, or moments that helped you unlock something new in the role?

MM: There is an emotional moment when Donna is visiting and trying to cautiously give advice, and I had trouble reaching as far as it needed to go. Director Jordan Noel gave me the space and confidence to find the edge of emotion needed, without spilling over into indulgence .

TW: Did the character evolve from what was on the page once you stepped into her shoes? Were there aspects you brought to the role that weren’t initially scripted, or that came to life during filming?

MM: I think, yes! She began in the script and upon meeting, interacting, and listening to the other characters, there was no way not to evolve. I hope I brought something new and relatable to her. I played her as a real mom, in those circumstances, and listened to the other characters so my responses were natural, from her heart.

TW: When choosing new roles, what kinds of stories or characters are resonating with you these days? Are you looking for bold, boundary-pushing projects, or do you gravitate more toward character-driven, emotional pieces?

MM: There are very few auditions that I turn down. You can learn from the smallest of roles! However, ideally, character driven, bold, boundary-pushing… all of the above would be perfect!

TW: You’ve had such an interesting trajectory so far—what’s next on your radar? Are there any upcoming films, series, or projects that you’re especially excited about?

MM: My character recently wrapped on a film that comes out around the end of June. Not a huge role, but she is dynamic! That’s all the info I can give out, for now. So… to be continued…

From her nuanced performance in Guacamole Yesterdays to her award-winning work on stage and growing list of film and TV credits, Megan McFarland continues to carve out a space as a bold and deeply human storyteller. As she looks ahead to new roles and creative challenges, one thing is clear—her passion for the craft and her ability to connect with audiences aren’t going anywhere. Keep an eye on this multifaceted talent; her next act is sure to be just as compelling as the last.
