“From” is back for its third season and Angela Moore reprised her role as Bakta. The Stephen King-like horror series has been terrifying and intriguing audiences over the past couple of years, and this exciting new season is equally amazing so far. The Leo Award-nominated actress is not only known for her roles in the popular MGM+ series “From,” she’s been in Netflix’s “A Series of Unfortunate Events,” Amazon’s “The Stand,” Netflix’s “Maid,” Lifetime’s “The Christmas Aunt,” ABC’s “The Good Doctor,” “A Million Little Things,” and The CW’s “Nancy Drew.”
Originally from London, England, she grew up in Etobicoke, Ontario outside of Toronto. Moore has been a professional actress for over 25 years in film,TV and theater. She’d thought about being a teacher or lawyer, but then found her love for acting after seeing Cicely Tyson’s performance in “The Autobiography of Miss Jane Pittman.” She was hooked, attended theater schools, and the show biz world is better for it. She has given back to her community by serving two terms on the Executive Board of UBCP/ACTRA where she became passionate about advocating for BIPOC performers. Read on for stories from the sets of “From” and “Supernatural!” and get up close with Angela Moore.
Colleen Bement: What a great project to be a part of, and congratulations on season 3 of “From.” It is such a clever series. What are you allowed to share about this season?
Angela Moore: Thank you! In season 3 there are moments of hope, heartbreak, fresh terror and a deep sense of what family means. The townspeople face new dangers and heartbreak in their bid to survive this strange place with their sanity intact.
CB: What has life on the set been like? Have you faced any challenges?
AM: The cast and crew of “From” are very hardworking and focused. Having said that, they also love to share a laugh, dance and have a good time. We’re always teasing each other or sharing funny stories. We celebrate birthdays during our time together – we also have some great musicians!
The main challenge in season 3 was filming in the winter! I’m not sure how our set survived the big blizzard, but it did! Halifax is a beautiful city, during all seasons, but my goodness, that winter wind hit me so hard I could see my ancestors. Yikes! Luckily, I only had a couple of days outside. I was one of the lucky ones.
CB: I saw your photos from the premiere on your Instagram. You looked stunning! What was the premiere like?
AM: Thank you so much! I love dressing up every now and then. The premiere was great! The theater had a huge FROM backdrop and served Talisman cocktails (featuring Sable bourbon)! And a premiere isn’t complete without popcorn served in “From” containers. After the first episode was shown, there was a Q&A with the showrunners, Jeff Pinkner and John Griffin alongside Harold Perrineau, and Catalina Sandino Moreno.
CB: Do you have any other projects in the works that you’re allowed to share?
AM: I played Det. Celia St. James in an upcoming Lifetime movie called Husband, Father, Killer: The Alyssa Pladly Story which should be out in a couple of weeks.
CB: Can we chat about “Supernatural”? I have a lot of readers who are SPN fans and we’d ALL love to hear a story from the set. I saw your Instagram post about it. Loved it!!!
AM: Well, I’ve actually been on “Supernatural” twice! Once, a long, long time ago as a bus clerk and then as Brenda in season 13. It was awesome working with director Amanda Tapping. And I’d be lying if I didn’t mention how distracting it was to work opposite Jensen Ackles. That man is too handsome and every time he looked at me with those eyes, I forgot my lines. 😆😍
CB: Now let’s switch gears to causes that are important to you. You’ve been active in some very important causes and thank you for all that you do. What are you working on lately?
AM: I was recently honored with a UBCP/Actra’s Honorary Life Member award for my service with the union. I served for 6 years as an Executive Board member, chair of the BIPOC committee, and co-chair of the Women’s Committee. One of my objectives was to address the lack of statistics around representation of equity seeking groups within our jurisdiction. That culminated with us working with the Geena Davis Institute to produce a report: From Real to Reel Representation and Inclusion in Film and TV produced in British Columbia. Another was to address the inequity with hair and makeup for racialized performers. For decades, I would go to work always having my hair done professionally before and would often provide my own makeup to ensure a good match with my skin tone. That’s not fair and it’s not right and we need to make sure that productions and their craftspeople are adequately prepared and trained to deal with everyone’s skin tone. There have been many conversations taking place in the US, Canada, UK, and Europe about this and you can find many of them online if you want to learn more. I recently contributed to some preliminary negotiations with ACTRA and producers in this regard.
CB: Just a couple of random questions:
- Is music a part of your life? Do you sing? Play an instrument? Regrettably, I don’t really sing though I can carry a tune. I used to play piano, trumpet and guitar but didn’t keep up those skills. I love music, however, and I am a child of the 80s, so that’s the music I know all the words to. Halifax was a great place to enjoy live music and I would go every chance I could.
- If you could have a superpower, what would it be? I would speak more languages, like French, Spanish or Cantonese.
- What’s the latest TV show that you’ve binge-watched? I binge-watched Korean drama, “Queen of Tears.” I love Korean drama!
