Nils Hognestad: The film was just as much fun to film as it is to watch. We shot through a heatwave in Vancouver and we’re all probably suffering varying degrees of heatstroke. We shot the finale scene over two long night shoots- fortunately, the temperatures were much more bearable, but we did suffer long laughing fits that are noticeable if you look close enough.
NH: Heck yes I am. Every year. Many people have remarked how intensely we get in the spirit. I started the Christmas music as early as November this year. We bake 7 different kinds of cookies on the first day of advent, 7 boxes of Christmas decorations, my whole family is going to the Vancouver Men’s Chorus Christmas concert (which has become an annual tradition). We’re all decorated in our home and I’m watering our tree daily. I’ll be going to BC’s Sunshine Coast to be with my family for Christmas and am looking forward to all the pickled herring, kransekake, and Glögg.
CB: I read that you were born in Bergen, Norway. I’ve always been fascinated with the beauty and culture of Norway. What was it like growing up there?
NH: I didn’t spend too much time living there and have few memories, though I remember it feeling very safe, fresh, clean, picturesque, and fantastical. I was 8, however, and could have just been seeing life through an 8-year old’s rose-tinted glasses. We lived near a children’s theatre. The shows didn’t cost much, so my mom would give my sister and me some money and we’d walk to the theatre and watch plays. It rained a lot. The shrimp were amazing.
CB: What is your favorite country that you’ve visited, and what country are you dying to visit?
NH: That’s a really tough question. I think I have to say South Korea. My family and I were hosted so well in SoKo; I learned so much about Korean history, ate like a King, and had some breathtaking experiences like visiting the DMZ. Positano is a close second for relaxing reasons.
I’m dying to visit Japan. I’ve been wanting to go since I was very young. My father did a lot of business there and we’ve all grown to share his love of Japanese culture. He’s now taken to making his own Dashi broths and owns 3 separate karaoke machines. I’m ready.
CB: You have a Bubble Tea addiction? I do too. What’s your favorite flavor?
NH: I can’t solidly answer this as I haven’t tried them all yet. I like to explore all options before making a solid decision. Though… Passion Fruit Slush with Lychee jelly, tapioca pearls, and strawberry chunks, zero sugar is a current top contender. I just recently found out hot bubble tea is also a thing, so that may change the whole game! I may never find a favorite.
CB: Were your parents supportive of you becoming an actor?
NH: Oh yah. They were always supportive. Excited? No. Not even close.
