Bryk survived his first day on set after shooting a scene to have a giant bloody cursed tooth pulled out of his mouth. Welcome to “Wynonna Earp!”
The up and coming actor Billy Bryk is enjoying his time as a series regular on SyFy’s hit show “Wynonna Earp.” His role as Billy Clanton can be seen during its new season set to return sometime in 2021. Along with other exciting projects in the works, he as a notable supporting cast role in Jason Reitman’s new “Ghostbusters: Afterlife.” He even went behind the camera as well as in front in the short film “L for Loser.” His career is already shining and no doubt his father, Greg Bryk of “The Expanse” and “Frontier” is very proud. Get to know the actor behind Billy Clanton.
Colleen Bement: “Wynonna Earp” is such an amazing show. Tell us about your experience on set. Do you have any stories that you can share?
Billy Bryk: It’s an amazing show. My first day shooting was this scene where I had to pull a gigantic cursed tooth out of my mouth. The prosthetic tooth was dipped in fake blood and I had to hold it in the back of my mouth with a pair of pliers. I started gagging almost immediately and remember thinking “I’m going to puke everywhere. I’m going to be the guy who pukes on his first day.” Thankfully I didn’t, but if you watch the scene you can see me gagging.
CB: Had you watched the show before?
BB: I had seen a couple of episodes because my Dad was in the first season. I knew about the show and the incredible fan base. I was really excited to get to be a part of it.
CB: I’ve heard that you have a part in the upcoming film “Ghostbusters: Afterlife.” What are you allowed to share about that cool project?
BB: I can’t really share anything new about the project. I will say that I think it’s going to be incredible. So many talented people worked on that film and I met some of my closest friends on set. I can’t wait to see it.
CB: What is it like working on a project as a Producer? I see that you are a Producer of the short film “L for Loser.”
BB: My older brother Dempsey wrote and directed that film. I acted in it and got to produce it as well. My job mostly entailed helping change/develop the script and going through other films with him that might influence “L For Loser” tonally, stylistically, etc. I had a ton of fun doing it and hope to be able to produce more of my friends/families films in the future.
CB: Are you allowed to share anything about your film “Dreamland?” Does it have a release date yet? What was the set like?
BB: That was the first feature film I ever acted in. I was quite nervous on my first day but everyone was so great that I calmed down pretty quickly. I got to work with Evangeline Lilly and she was amazing. I don’t know when it will release but I’m excited to see it.
CB: You have such a bright future in showbiz. How did you catch the acting bug? Did your father encourage you?
BB: I’ve always loved movies. I wanted to be an actor when I was a kid but when I got a little bit older I started focusing on writing and directing. It wasn’t until I saw Jonah Hill’s Mid90s that I decided to drop out of film school and pursue acting full time. He spoke about learning the craft of filmmaking through his career as an actor. That’s my goal as an actor and a filmmaker. Thankfully, my parents were really supportive of the decision.
CB: When you need inspiration, what do you do? Is there a particular type of music that you listen to? Do you enjoy the outdoors?
BB: I love walking and listening to music but the ultimate place to think is in the shower. It’s the best place to come up with ideas but the absolute worst place to write them down. I too often find myself frantically washing shampoo out of my hair while repeating a plot point or joke in my head so I don’t forget it. Unfortunately, I don’t always remember what I was thinking. If there’s such a thing as a waterproof notebook and pen I think it’d be a wise purchase for me.
