The trailer has dropped. The gauntlet has been thrown down. It’s almost here, the fight of the millennia, the rumble that destroys the jungle; “Godzilla vs Kong” is about to wreak havoc! The trailer that we waited more than a year forgives us all a little bit of a lot. Here’s a couple of key points from the trailer in case you missed them.
Godzilla Breaking Bad
The trailer sets the stage with a rampaging Godzilla destroying cities, attacking human civilization with abandon and it leaves the viewers just stunned. Could this be our Godzilla? The enigmatic force of nature who chose to side with humans in two movies, decidedly becoming mankind’s savior but now smashing buildings and letting loose his atomic breath on fleeing citizens!? Now it’s common practice for trailers to be skillfully carved by malicious editors to purposefully mislead us so they can effectively surprise us. At least that’s what Godzilla fans everywhere hope. A careful look though at the screen when people are looking up as they run from devastation shows a metallic figure overhead with red lights. Hmmmm.. Nope that’s not Godzilla.
Kong and Boo
The trailer works hard to set up a relationship between Kong and a young girl from Skull Island. Who the girl is exactly is completely up for speculation but she doesn’t remind you of Boo from Monster’s Inc to Kong’s Sully. She will now. Consider that ruined for you from this point forward. So the good researchers from Skull Island who are transporting Kong decide to take Boo into, what would be right in the middle of danger, to keep her safe. Researchers don’t make good parents, ask Millie Bobbie Brown. Bonus points for the terrible parental figures because Boo seems to have a connection to Kong and him to her. The beauty and the beast theme never gets old.
Kong gets Stormbreaker!
We see Kong in what seems to be a journey into the hollow earth and it hints at Kong learning some things about himself and his kind. One of the things he picks up is Stormbreaker! For MCU fans it’s the new weapon Thor gets to almost kill Thanos, almost. At a close inspection of “Titanbreaker” we see that it’s a giant war ax with a wooden handle so cool looking I’m pretty sure Groot made it and the ax itself is beyond a shadow of a doubt one of the dorsal plates as seen on Godzilla. Now is that a plate pulled off of Godzilla or one fashioned from the plate of one of his species’ long-dead remains to be seen. Still, it is quite clear from the trailer it’s capable of taking an extended full atomic blast like it was made from a dwarf star. Sorry MCU.
Mechagodzillazord
The trailer clearly shows us a mechanized giant terrorizing the city. Past Godzilla movies have already used the Godzilla doppelganger plot device, faux skin on the outside, mechanized maniac underneath. But there are other clues; we have one the severed head of Ghidorah, the skeletal remains of the long-dead Godzilla species, a new corporate player called Apex Cybernetics, plus the most important clue of all. The leaked Mechagodzilla toy image. Put that all together and there is defiantly going to me a mechanized giant in this movie. In what capacity remains to be seen. The trailer clearly works hard to blur any context to the scenes and that tells us Mechagodzilla will be impactful.
**SPOILER WARNING**
If the following prediction is true it may ruin the movie for you so read at your own risk.
Place Your Bets
Godzilla is a force of nature. He has sided with humans in the past two movies but there isn’t much in the way of empathy or genuine connection. Kong from his first movie has shown to have the capability to form an empathetic connection with humans. It’s again shown as he has grown larger to have a connection with an even smaller human child. Kong is a strength of will. His entire formula is based off of seeing him fight against the odds to protect someone. That’s when we get the best of Kong, we connect with that. It was clearly stated that there will be a winner between these two in the movie. If they’re using plot devices like Stormbreaker, and falling back on the beauty and the beast theme. I feel we may see another familiar storyline as seen in the Avengers: the sacrifice play. Kong can win the fight, this is already shaping up like Rocky and Drago. Kong is clearly the underdog. If he wins the fight but makes the sacrifice play and gives his life for humanity, Godzilla can step back in, handle the final boss fight and win. Both come out winners, Kong beat Godzilla. Godzilla beats the bad guy. Franchise secured. If you think that theory is too farfetched, let’s see what the Vegas odds are!
