Welcome to October, fellow nerds! I’m Colleen. I’m the Editor of Nerd Alert News, and I spend a big part of my day nerding out over sci-fi and Pop Culture. Today’s topic is a spooky one! This is that favorite season for so many nerds like me who love to soak up everything scary, haunted, and fun. Yes, I of course mean Halloween. What are your October 31st traditions? Get together for a friendly game of Zombicide? Do you dress up to scare those adorable little trick-or-treaters? Do you light up the house with nothing but candles, open a bottle of wine, and organize the horror DVDs for the night? Or wait–Maybe that’s just me.
Why do we, as nerds, love Halloween? Is it because we get the chance to break out that cosplay again? Is it because we embrace the supernatural? Maybe it’s just because this spooky holiday provides an ideal platform for us to express our creativity, showcase our passions, and connect with others who share our interests. So yes, please. Bring on Halloween! Let’s join the staff here at Nerd Alert News in naming our absolute favorite horror movies.
Anthony Taylor, Apes on Film
My favorite Halloween movie is George Pal’s “War of the Worlds” (1953). I was seven years old the first time I saw it, and entranced with the amazing (for the time) special effects of the Martian war machines. It remains a Halloween tradition for its sense of spectacle and feels like warm Autumn comfort food to me.
TiShea Wilson, NaN Social Media Manager
My favorite Halloween movie is “Sleepy Hollow” (1999 Starring Johnny Depp). The creative spin on the old legend is the perfect blend of captivating and suspenseful. It’s been a tradition of mine for years to watch it Halloween night. (Along with the movie, “Halloween,” of course 😉)
Mandie Stevens, NaN’s Horror Corner
My favorite Halloween movie is “House Of 1000 Corpses”. It has every element a horror movie needs: it indubitably captures the essence of early campy slashers; the plot is well-written; and it has one hell of a soundtrack. Written, co-scored, and directed by Rob Zombie, HOTC is the 1st of a trilogy which is followed by “The Devil’s Rejects” and “3 From Hell,” they’re all from Rob Zombie.
Hayley Samulski, Staff Writers
My favorite Halloween movie is “The Nightmare Before Christmas.” It’s such a timeless story and contains one of my all-time favorite Disney movie soundtracks. I try and watch it every year as a Halloween tradition.
Ed Carter, Movin Meeples
“Army of Darkness”. It is so campy and Bruce Campbell is just awesome in it as Ash from the “Evil Dead” series, and Danny Elfman composed The March of the Dead for this movie.
Evan Conroy, Guest Writer
It’s not really a movie, I guess, but I love “It’s the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown.” For me, it’s even better than “A Charlie Brown Christmas.” Linus and Sally in the pumpkin patch, the party, the trick or treating; “I got a rock.” It’s a classic and a can’t-miss tradition for me.

Danny Elfman and Tim Burton live in my nerdy, dark little heart during Halloween. Therefore, my top two favorite Halloween movies are “The Nightmare Before Christmas” and “Beetlejuice”– Cue Harry Belafonte’s Day ’O song! If I had to choose a third, though, it would definitely be Hitchcock’s “The Birds” That film scared the ever-livin’ crap out of me when I was a kid! Side Note: It’s also why I love Catherine O’Hara’s role in the fictional The Crows Have Eyes II in “Schitt’s Creek.”
To conclude, what are YOUR favorite Halloween flicks? I’m going to read a few off, and nod your head when you hear your favorites– ”Hocus Pocus,” “Scream,” “The Shining,” “Poltergeist,” “A Nightmare on Elm Street,” “The Conjuring,” “Ghostbusters,” AND, of course…the original “Halloween!” Stay safe and stay nerdy!
