“The Hillywood Show” has become part of the “Supernatural” family with their popular parodies of the CW hit series now entering its 14th season. Hilly and Hannah Hindi have finally found some time to chat with fans and enjoy their creation of “Supernatural Parody 2“. The talented sisters have been delighting audiences with parody videos of hit TV shows such as “Supernatural”, “Doctor Who,” and “Sherlock” as well as films like “The Lord of the Rings” and “Harry Potter” since 2006. The cast of “Supernatural” including Jared Padalecki, Jensen Ackles, and Misha Collins make the time to be a part of their fabulous projects. Go behind the scenes of the making of “Supernatural Parody 2” and find out how it all started.
Colleen Bement: Tell your fans all about making this labor of love called “Supernatural Parody 2.”
Hannah Hindi: I believe pre-production took about three months, and then filming was for 17 days, and then post-production was almost like three and a half months. In total, we’re going to say it took about 7-8 months to create.
CB: How did you connect with so many past and present “Supernatural” actors?
Hilly Hindi: A lot of the credit goes to when we first met Osric (Chau) four years ago. He and Richard (Speight Jr.) were the ones that were able to help us with “Supernatural Parody” the original. That’s when we were in Vegas Con and we were sitting in a room and we just waited there for four days I think it was. We didn’t leave the room, we didn’t go ask anybody, we were just told stay here, and if someone wants to do it, they’ll come in. So would just stay in a room and ponder should we go get lunch? But what if somebody comes in? God provided and mostly everybody came in.
For this one, thankfully “Supernatural Parody” the original happened because that’s what really helped us meet them in person, and have relationships with some of them like Richard who appeared in our “Stranger Things Parody” and he shot with us for 4-5 days. Osric was featured in more parodies and that really helps develop relationships.
Going into “Supernatural Parody 2” we had the vision for it and how it consisted of more than just a little dance on a white background. It was an actual role–a costume, a part of the son. I asked Hannah, do you think we can do it? She said I think we can try. So we prayed about it because we also had a second option for a parody and it was between “Untitled Parody” because that might actually happen, or “Supernatural Parody 2”. Let’s pray that God shows us which one to do because we’re confused and we shouldn’t be confused at all. We prayed about and I said well, Hannah, we should do the scariest thing first, and we asked if “The Boys” were even interested. If Jensen and Jared weren’t interested, we’re not going to proceed. The production would just have to, unfortunately, live in the back of my brain for the rest of my life.
We texted Cliff (Kosterman) in January asked him if maybe they would be down, are they really interested. About a couple days later Cliff texted back and said Jensen texted and said “hell yeah.” We were thrilled, and that was our answer to prayers. After we got the green light from “The Boys” we started writing Ruth (Connell) and Jim (Beaver) and people who weren’t featured in the first one, and they were just like “I don’t care what it is–I’m in!” It’s one of those things that you have to thank God for because we understand that it’s not by our work, if it’s meant to be, the doors will open. We just went along for the ride and we strapped in real tight.
Hannah: Not only when “The Boys” were saying yes, it came down to the filming days, obviously you had for example, minus the three Misha, Jared, and Jensen, we had 23-24 people that all were available within four days of each other. Everybody was sending us the same dates. It was just one of those things were said oh my gosh, you’d better hop on the train because it’s going and you’d better get on.
CB: What is it like working so closely as sisters?
Hilly: It has its ups and downs. The ups are that we get each other. Hannah’s like my shadow self and she knows exactly what the vision is that I’m trying to explain. She’s my other half of organization. I would not know how to organize the schedule. She handled it like a pro. That’s the gift of that she has. The down is that sometimes we have to step back a little bit and just have sister time that doesn’t involve talking about a project. Let’s just play some video games or just watch a movie together because we don’t want our sisterhood to be just business 24/7.
CB: How does it feel to ride in the Impala?
Hannah: The first one I had to ride on the floor in the back trying to direct, and I had to get out and check the footage each time with the camera operator also on the floor in the back with me. It was a bumpy ride for me. What about you, Hill?
Hilly: I loved it. It was the same actual car that I used in “Supernatural Parody 2”. We had two different Impalas. We had the Impala in Kansas, which was the original “Supernatural Parody” Impala. The one that was in studio was Charlie the Impala which is owned by Jamie, and she provided that one for the Vegas shoots. All the actors smooshed in it that was the other Impala. I was just happy that I was able to drive the original because they’re both built differently. It was like coming back home because I’d missed driving it so much. I love, love that car. It’s a joyride. I get a real thrill in driving her.
CB: Do you have any other projects in Hillywood’s near future?
Hilly: I think right now it feels like we’ve been pregnant with “Supernatural Parody 2” for about eight months, and we want to be like proud parents and watch it grow and get out into the world and leave the next. Now we really just want to take the time to enjoy speaking and interacting with the fans. That’s what brings us joy. That’s why we do what we do because of the fans. Without their love and encouragement, we just wouldn’t do it anymore.
CB: What conventions the rest of this year can fans come to see you?
Hilly: We will be at Fan Expo in Toronto, FanX Salt Lake Comic Con, then Armageddon Expo in Auckland, New Zealand, and then lastly in Germany for their German Comic Con. It really just depends on if the fans request us. We only get invited if fans request us. If fans want to see us at a local convention, just write the organizers with a request. That’s the only way we can go and say hello.
