Sure, everyone knows Christmas films, strips like “Home Alone“, “Christmas Vacation” or “Die Hard” are simply part of the more or less contemplative celebration and help us to get into the Christmas spirit. Christmas series, on the other hand, cut out an existence in the larger-than-life shadow of their film siblings.
Unfair, because a series about the celebration of love will also bring the Christmas spirit to life in you and, due to their narrative form, delve even deeper into the Christmas spirit over several episodes.
The 7 best Christmas series:
Dash & Lily (2020)
Lily is shy but optimistic, while Dash is cynical and not at all a Christmas fan. Using coincidence and a red notebook (and Paul Auster fans know the power in this one and the other!), the two disparate teenagers begin to share their desires, fears and dreams. They mutually set themselves tasks that change their worldview. And soon the two realize that they have more in common than they first thought.
Psychological-philosophical romance with a dash of teen humor, the right dose of kitsch, pictures of New York decorated for Christmas and, on top of that, a performance by the Jonas Brothers: It doesn’t get any better than this in a Christmas series!
How to Ruin Christmas (since 2020)
Prodigal daughter Tumi returns home for Christmas and promptly ruins her sister’s wedding plans. Now she has to fix everything quickly before it’s too late…will it work?
The somewhat different Christmas series from South Africa about two sympathetic and chaotic families gives authentic insight into the local customs and traditions when it comes to Christmas and weddings, and satisfies the wanderlust that some of us get when it comes to the holidays. In short: a colorful robber’s ladder to contentment.
Hjem til jul (Home for Chrismas) (since 2019)
For fans of ‘Sex and the City’ and all the Christmas rom-coms out there, long-term single Joanne is annoyed by her family’s question about when she’ll finally bring a boyfriend home. So she invents one without further ado. It’s just stupid that she actually has to show up with a man for the family Christmas party. So the Advent season turns into a stressful search for Mr. Right.
It is a successful situation comedy, with contemporary humor, and likable actors: The Swedish series was a surprise hit for Netflix!
Three days of Christmas (2019)
Four sisters deal with family drama and secrets at three different times in their lives each Christmas. The Spanish drama series vividly shows how people change over the course of life, what traces the past can leave behind and that the soul often heals, but sometimes not.
At several Christmas celebrations, the spellbound viewer experiences how the protagonists grow up. Great feelings are not spared here.
Merry Happy Whatever (2019)
Dennis Quaid plays the loving but troublesome and strict daddy of a large family in this classic yet hilarious and heartwarming sitcom. “Merry Happy Whatever” tells about the stressful days around Christmas and will also put a smile on your face, even if you no longer know where your head is when it comes to shopping, baking and writing Christmas cards.
Here’s what it’s all about: Don Quinn (Quaid) tries to balance the desires of his diverse but close-knit family with the stress of the holidays – while his family does their best to keep him under control.
However, when his youngest daughter Emmy (Bridgit Mendler) arrives from Los Angeles with her new boyfriend Matt (Brent Morin), a rather unsuccessful musician, Don’s motto “There’s the Quinn way… and the wrong way” gets tough tested. But in the end, family is the greatest gift of all!
A Storm For Christmas (2022)
A group of people arrives at Oslo Airport. Some want to greet their loved ones, others want to travel home. However, they have one thing in common: they are stuck at the airport as Christmas approaches.
Smiley (2022)
Alex has just had his heart broken. After meeting an attractive young man, he was sure he had found the one. But after a few weeks he is suddenly and unexpectedly ghosted by him. Alex is pissed off and leaves his ex an angry voicemail. Unfortunately, he dialed the wrong number. The voice message ends up with a man Alex has never met before: Bruno. This mishap sets off a series of events that will forever change the lives of the two men.
