Watching season 2 of Wednesday takes me back to my high school days. If I had had any cool mystical talents, I might have made a decent student at Nevermore Academy. Possibly lending my creativity to the school newspaper. Sadly, though, I was just that basic nerd who did not fit in. And this was back when being a nerd was definitely not cool. This Netflix series is more than just an amazing watch. It has powerful storylines that draw us in touch on feelings of wanting to fit in. Wednesday, especially season 2 so far, has taken many of us back to our lives as teenagers. As someone who has definitely felt like an outsider, I have felt a resonance in the experiences of the Nevermore students and faculty. Whether it’s Wednesday, Enid, Pugsley, or even Principal Dort, their outcast status often echoes emotions many of us may have felt at one time in our youth.

Wednesday: Outcast among outcasts

Though Wednesday steps into newfound popularity at Nevermore—”one of the cool kids” even—this does little to bridge the emotional gaps she really feels. It’s a powerful mirror for those who’ve been celebrated on the surface but still feel isolated inside. She might actually have a fear of becoming her mother, and I can relate to that. My mom was a bit of a celebrity as a national champion baton twirler. I was the twirler for my high school, and I had no desire to follow the path that she found herself stuck in. Just like Wednesday, it was a struggle—wanting that connection yet terrified of its implications.

Enid’s relentless optimism contrasts with Wednesday’s stoicism—but she’s also grappling with her place in this world. Their friendship highlights how those of us from different backgrounds can find strength and belonging in each other, even when the rest feel disinterested. I shared Enid’s optimism, but was pretty much a loner who had only a few close friends.

Pugsley enters Nevermore carrying the label of the Addams kid—and he’s figuring out what that means. Witnessing this awkward, hopeful journey can echo our own teenage quests to belong, learn, and be seen—even when we feel left behind.

Storytelling that feels a bit crowded

I have to admit that so far season 2 feels like it is cramming too many characters and subplots into the storyline. LOIS, Enid’s romance, steamy family drama, broken powers, crow attacks, zombies, and more. But that whirlwind of narratives kind of mirror what it feels like for some teenagers. I do want to add that I’m really enjoying the character of the deputy, Luyanda Unati Lewis-Nyawo. She’s a bit of a stand out for me. I hope we get to know her a little better. We will have to see how all these storylines come together when Wednesday Season 2, Part 2 returns on Sept. 3rd. I’m curious who else feels a connection as some of these outcasts on this brilliant show. Please leave a note in the comments if you share in this connection.
