Kimberly-Sue Murray embraced her role in the new psychological thriller “Trader” and earned Best Lead Performance in a Feature Film at the Hamilton Film Fest. Praised as A real gem, Kimberly-Sue Murray is right up there with Tom Hardy in Locke and this will be one of those single actor movies that will make it on Top 5 lists. Fans know this award-winning actress/writer/producer is best known for her recurring roles in the super popular “Shadowhunters,” “V-Wars,” and “The Wedding Planners.” Gamers have heard her voice as Gamora in 2021’s Marvel’s “Guardians of the Galaxy” video game, and have seen her in shows such as “9 Films About Technology,” “Titans,” and “Transplant.” Of course, audiences saw her shine in “Die Alone” opposite Carrie-Ann Moss and Frank Grillo.

“Trader” is a thrill ride from start to finish, and is brilliantly brought to life by Murray. Learning how the movie was created makes it all the more enticing to watch! Catch this exciting film on all major VOD platforms, and in case you missed it later, find it on Tubi. Once you check out the trailer, you’ll be hooked, and check out our interview with the film’s star, Kimberly-Sue Murray.

Colleen Bement: Congrats on your exciting new film “Trader.” I swear I was holding my breath while watching the trailer, and your performance looks incredible. Your awards are SO well deserved. What was it like on the set? Did it have kind of a  claustrophobic feel to it?

Kimberly-Sue Murray: Thank you so much! I hope you get to experience it in its entirety. It’s quite the ride! It was a pretty chill set actually. We were a small crew shooting in the basement of a barbershop. It was a little cold and damp, but I used the discomfort to my advantage. I don’t remember feeling claustrophobic. I like small spaces, kind of feels like a hug.

CB: The photos on your Instagram give us a glimpse into what it must have been like to film “Trader.” How did you prep for the role? Was there a lot of physical training?

KSM: I had a month to prep and while Corey, our writer/director, gave me a crash course on stock trading, I chose to focus on Trader’s backstory. We know nothing about her, so it was important to me to have a very vivid and specific history, that way emotions could just bubble up to the surface without me trying too hard. You do the homework and then you let it go. There was no physical training required. I just let myself go. I stopped grooming myself, I didn’t wash my hair much, I wore no makeup, and embraced my rosacea flare-ups. I wanted Trader to be as raw as possible.

CB: What was your first reaction when you read the script?

KSM: “I WANT THIS!” Corey wrote such an interesting story with a terrifying antihero. It’s complicated and smart and raw and wrong and so deeply f**ked, pardon my French. It was exactly the kind of project I was making room for in my life.

CB: Can we switch gears and talk “Shadowhunters?” What a great series and the fandom is definitely still alive! Two questions:

1.) What was it like in hair and makeup each day on set?

KSM: It was lovely. The hair and makeup team were just the BEST! I really enjoyed spending that time with them. You know, we don’t give them enough credit. Not only are they in charge of the way we look, they also set the tone for the day. They’re the first people we actors interact with in the morning and a great hair/mu artist will make you feel comfortable, safe, supported, and ready to take on the day.

2.) Do you happen to have a story from the set that you can share?

KSM: Well the most memorable/traumatic one is when Luke Baines and I shot that nightclub scene. We were doing a stunt and it went horribly wrong and poor Luke dislocated (fractured maybe?) his shoulder. I was mortified. The joke after was that the Seelie Queen had breasts of steel and to not mess around with me.

CB: Did you have fun playing Gamora in Marvel’s “Guardians of the Galaxy” video game?

KSM: The most fun! Truly!!! I loved every single second of it. It was an ideal scenario; top-notch creative team, insanely good scripts, and the funniest cast I’ve ever had the pleasure of working with. I would reprise my role in a heartbeat.

CB: Do you get anxiety before an audition or the first day on set? If so, how do you handle that?

KSM: I used to get really nervous going in the room to audition, but since COVID, everything’s via video and I LOVE that. I feel really creative and feel a sense of ownership over my work. I do still get first-day jitters the night before a new project, but that dissipates fairly quickly once I get started and then it’s all play.
