Lisa Berry chatted with Nerd Alert News about her career, life, and becoming a new mother. The actress has wrapped up season 15 of “Supernatural” where she played the reaper, Billie. Out of Toronto, Ontario fans also know her from “Shadowhunters,” “Slasher,” and “Working Moms.” An inspiration to so many women, this actress follows her instincts and “turns her experiences into growth.” Berry shared about that role and what the SPN Family has meant to her through her entire journey in the fandom.
Jadeen Mercado: You have been an inspiration to so many women in the “Supernatural” fandom, how does that make you feel?
Lisa Berry: Connected. There’s always someone somewhere who knows exactly how you feel.
JM: All of your social media platforms are peppered with messages of love and support, what inspired you to use your platform this way?
LB: Someone once told me that when you can bless someone else while you’re going through your own storm, you heal yourself.
JM: How has motherhood changed you as a person, woman, and what have your experiences taught you? (congratulations)
LB: Thank you. Becoming a mother has helped me to realize that I can do anything!!! Delivering my son was the most miraculous, soul-fulfilling, physically challenging experience.
It shifted my priorities, the way I talk to myself, and the energy I put out into the world. Knowing that he’s learning how to ‘be’ through my example makes me even more present and mindful. He activates so much healing energy in me. It is an extraordinary gift being Khylins’ mom. All that to say, I’ve outgrown who I was, and I’m evolving into who I will be.
JM: “Supernatural” is coming to an end, and you are a kickass being on the show, how has playing Billie changed you, and what will you miss most about “Supernatural?”
LB: I’m not sure I’ll ever be able to put into words just how much I appreciate all the love people have shown this character. Playing Billie has been a wonderful gift. But, if there’s one thing I’ve learned from this role, it’s that death is not the end, and this is not goodbye.
JM: The fandom is a very expressive and passionate bunch, what are some amazing experiences or positives that have affected you in the fandom?
LB: I’ve witnessed this fandom family move mountains to help entire communities, families, and individuals on a regular basis —Spreading love far and wide in every direction. And I am no exception to being one of the souls they’ve reached. Because of them, I’m singing again. Something I never thought I’d do, but this family has helped me heal parts of myself I thought would be broken forever.
JM: You seem to have fantastic friendships with the cast, especially the ladies, how important are those relationships to you and what advice can you give about nurturing friendships?
LB: Very important. I believe that having meaningful friendships is an essential ingredient to living a happy life, so I do my best to give them the care and attention they deserve.
JM: The pandemic has been a crazy time, how has it affected you?
LB: 2020 was the year I had my son, so I feel blessed to have had time away from the hustle. This let me put my focus and energy into completing a mindfulness program called B R E A T H E: A Lifestyle Course design to help people self soothe and feel better faster.
JM: You are a fantastic singer, you sing with Louden Swain during the SNS at conventions and even on -“Supernatural,” is singing a big passion of yours, will you ever pursue an album?
LB: Thank you, that’s very kind of you to say, but to be honest, before doing the conventions, I had lost all my self-esteem and confidence around singing. Being a part of “Supernatural” changed that. Getting to sing in my first episode, having that song be played over the season launch trailer, then getting asked to participate in the conventions and perform at the Saturday Night Specials (that no other conventions do) helped transform my belief in myself as a singer. Today I love singing, and yes, making music is definitely on my list of things I can’t wait to do in the future.
JM: You have mentioned before that you were a fan of “Supernatural” before ever being cast, what’s a cool BTS tidbit you can share with fellow fans?
LB: Getting to sit in, Baby! Jensen saw me eyeing her one day on set while filming “Celebrating the Life of Asa Fox,” He said, “go ahead, get in, have a seat.” I said, “I need permission because Baby’s like a black girl’s hair; you can’t just touch it without permission.” He laughed then gave me permission.
JM: What can we expect to see from you in the coming months, professionally, personally, musically?
LB: As I mentioned before, I created a lifestyle course because I’ve been receiving a lot of messages from people throughout our community asking me to be their life coach.
