Another WhimsyCon has come and gone and I’m left with fond memories.
The weekend was a getaway from the normal. It was a break in the routine where no responsibilities were tugging at my brain. I walked into the hotel and felt instantly transported to another world. Here was a space where attendees could leave everything behind and immerse themselves in Steampunk and costuming. The event took place last weekend, March 31- April 2, 2023, and nothing but joy, cosplay, music, gaming, and learning-filled the spaces. I took a break and a breath in the lovely Victorian Parlour thanks to Airship Iron Opal. I watched duels and witnessed fascinating conversations about cosplay materials, gadgets and gizmos, and everything in between. I marveled at the cosplay craftsmanship and creativity and strolled the vendor room with credit card in hand to bring home the most unique merchandise.
This enchanting weekend, I chatted with an award-winning author, an amazing artist and musician, and talented cosplayers who were willing and open to getting to know you. I had the opportunity to host Q&A panels with these Guests of Honor. Nebula, Hugo, and World Fantasy award-winning author Ken Liu entertained the audience with a reading from one of his books. The Dandelion Dynasty creator not only interacted with his fans with genuine interest, he showed support by attending other panels. Then, the pleasure was all mine to share the stage with the incredibly talented artist, designer, cultural worker, and Chinese Zither musician Clae Lu. Their performance on the zither pretty much took my breath away. With the talent and beauty of their music, they put peace and calm out into the universe while also entertaining. Award-winning cosplayers December Wynn and Winglight Cosplay participated in my Q&A and shared their experiences with the art. Along with helpful tips and amazing stories, we all learned how much work and dedication goes into creating cosplay projects. For those who missed the panels, the recordings will be up on NaN’s YouTube shortly.
Of course, the vendor room was filled with handmade items like those must-have goggles and hats to complete that Steampunk look. Gamers bought hard-to-find dice in every shape and color. There was unique jewelry, precious stones, stickers, stuffed animals, and amazing clothing. Someone even had a 3-D printer working away to make new treasures. Here, people could find unique gifts while coming home with treasures for themselves.
Now it is time to plan for next year’s WhimsyCon. I think I’ll start working on my cosplay!
