“More unites us than divides us” on episode two of this season’s ‘MARS‘. Commander Seung (actress Jihae) of the Olympus Town colony has it right when she describes Mars as a lonely place. She admits that some real connections have been made with some friendships forged. In the second episode of National Geographic’s hit series “MARS” called ‘Worlds Apart’, tensions have been building between the new inhabitants and the founders of the red planet. These explorers are millions of miles away from anyone else and they need to find common ground in order to survive.
Amelie Durand (Clémentine Poidatz) misses her life on Earth and feels the desperate need to return home. Will she go through with it? Hana Seung’s sister is on her way and she is anxious to see her. Lieutenant Michael Glenn (Gunnar Cauthery) just trying to do his job. Back on Earth Leslie Richardson (Cosima Shaw) is doing her best IMSF Headquarters in London, to keep the peace between the corporations and the scientists.
Reality check in present day here on Earth: Arctic activists with Greenpeace are fighting to save the international waters here are on Earth from the dangers of oil drilling. Quote from author Kim Stanley Robinson “Within the last couple generations we have the technological powers to wreck the earth in a way that we never had the power to before.” Case in point, the Deepwater Horizon oil spill disaster came after a massive set of errors.
Elon Musk states “I’m sure in the future there will be debates about Mars. What will the rules be? How might they be different from the rules here on Earth?”
Apparently, back in 1967, the world agreed to a treaty that states that no one can own another planet. According to author Michio Kaku, back in 1967 who would have thought there would be a debate over a private company claiming huge chunks of Mars. Who knew?

Episode two Synopsis:
“Worlds Apart”: IMSF and Lukrum, now sharing a common water and power source, have established a tenuous coexistence that threatens to dissolve when Kurt (Jeff Hephner) and his crew make unexpected headway in their mission to mine the planet, and Hana (Jihae) works to maintain diplomacy between the two camps—until tragedy strikes. Physicist Amelie Durand (Clémentine Poidatz) prepares to leave on her return journey to Earth—without love interest Javier Delgado (Alberto Ammann), Olympus Town’s hydrologist and geochemist. Meanwhile, on Earth, Dr. Leslie Richardson (Cosima Shaw) asserts her authority as the new IMSF Secretary-General. In present day, Greenpeace activists take to the seas to protest Arctic oil drilling in the Barents Sea, and the effectiveness of such tactics are examined.
