Although logic tells me that all good things must come to an end, my nostalgia overpowers that logic. The StarFest Convention in Denver, CO will live forever in my soul. The memories of meeting so many dear friends flood my heart. I have nothing but a grateful heart for all the amazing and passionate work that the Walker Family has done over the past 45 years. Wow, think about it. 45 years!
Over these years we’ve had generations old and new enjoy StarFest. We’ve had marriages, babies, and new friends, and have lost many dear friends that we will always hold in our hearts.
In my memories, I shall cherish meeting new people and reconnecting with other “Starfestians.” I will remember being brave to wear my first Cosplay. Oh, and those beautiful balconies! Those prized possessions that people would arrive days early to snag in order to decorate with Klingon or “Game of Thrones” house symbols, the inside of the Doctor’s TARDIS or Malcolm Reynolds’ Firefly. The passion and craftsmanship that went into building those works of art were stunning. Strolling through the atrium used to be an immersive nerdy experience with the decorated balconies, cosplayers, and an occasional robot.
This event has been a favorite time of year for so many people. A few loyal StarFest attendees have something to add.
Evan Conroy:
“I am so sad about the apparent end of StarFest. I was at the first StarFest in 1977. I wore my Spock shirt and I was upset I couldn’t go to the Federation Ball because I was too young. But I had an amazing time that I never forgot. I’ve been to many more over the years; I’ve cosplayed as Tom Baker’s Doctor Who, Peter Capaldi’s Doctor Who, Obi Wan Kenobi, Riker, The Shadow, and many more. Each cosplay is like a ticket into a different community; that’s part of the wonder. It’s always been such a highlight of the year for me. The vendors are fantastic, but the company is the best. So many wonderful people to meet over the years. I hope to really enjoy this year, though it may be depressing thinking that it might be the last. It’s going to leave a big hole.”
Becky Whelan:
“I am truly devastated to hear that StarFest is ending. For the last 10 years you all have been family. It’s been my vacation to another planet and where I met the love of my life. I hope to wake up from this nightmare. My whole family is devastated. Let’s make this the best ever StarFest!!”
Bret Smith:
Such sad news but what a great run! 45 years!! Friends I made in the 80s when I first attended are still friends today and more friends each year. Definitely a family. So many great guests and vendors and panels and costumes and balcony contests and auctions and trailer parks and dances and volunteers and autographs and photo ops and hanging with Samson in the bar. And then there was dinner with Walter. Yes we could and should keep this going.
Anthony Ruiz:
The news of this being the last Starfest breaks my heart. I would not be the person I am today without Starfest. It was the most anticipated part of my year, every year, without fail, for my entire childhood. It is what taught me that being a nerd is ok. It’s where 80% of my Godzilla collection came from. It’s where I first cosplayed, and that story is what inspired one of my favorite comics I’ve ever created. It’s where I met artists that inspired me to go on to art school, which lead me here to live in Japan. The impact Starfest had on my life is something I cannot stress enough. Thank you Starfest for all of the lovely memories. You never forget your first con.
