We’re back in the 80s mood and wanted to chat about some of our favorite 80s movies. John Hughes didn’t just make films — he made time capsules. Whether we were skipping school with Ferris, battling burglars with Kevin, or dancing in a pink dress with Andie, he gave us characters who felt real and moments that have stuck with us all these years. He gave us teenage angst and coming-of-age moments that we could relate to. Of course, there were those killer soundtracks that included Simple Minds, The Psychedelic Furs, OMD, and of course, Yello’s “Oh Yeah.” Narrowing down a list of favorites was tough, but here are our top five John Hughes movies. Travel back to the decade that gave us such great memories.

1. Ferris Bueller’s Day Off (1986)

“Life moves pretty fast. If you don’t stop and look around once in a while, you could miss it.”
No quote better sums up the spirit of John Hughes. Ferris Bueller wasn’t just a high school rebel skipping school; he was kind of a cultural icon. With its brilliant cast and a parade scene that is now cinematic legend, Ferris Bueller’s Day Off was the ultimate feel-good film about seizing the day. We’re still inspired by it, and who can help but twist those heels a little anytime “Twist and Shout” plays.

2. Sixteen Candles (1984)

Awkward teenage crushes, forgotten birthdays, and an iconic red Porsche — Sixteen Candles captures the awkward magic of being 16 in the most delightfully cringeworthy way. Molly Ringwald was amazing as Samantha Baker, navigating the chaos of high school while quietly longing for her dream guy. Who didn’t experience that during our teens? This film helped launch the “Brat Pack” era and remains a classic exploration of growing pains, first love, and family dysfunction.

3. National Lampoon’s Vacation (1983)

Before Clark Griswold became synonymous with Christmas chaos, he was dragging his family cross-country in National Lampoon’s Vacation. This road trip comedy, written by Hughes, is a hilarious journey full of mishaps and misadventures. Chevy Chase’s portrayal of the overly optimistic dad who tried to deliver the “perfect” family vacation was both ridiculous and actually relatable for some of us. It was family comedy gold that spawned multiple sequels including, the absolutely iconic Christmas Vacation.

4. Home Alone (1990)

Although better known for its holiday hijinks and slapstick brilliance, Home Alone was pure Hughes magic. His screenplay gave us Kevin McCallister, the super clever 8-year-old who fought off burglars with ingenuity and elaborate traps. Underneath the pranks and laughs was a story about family, forgiveness, and the comfort of home — all wrapped in a festive bow. The side storyline with the scary old neighbor still warms our hearts.

5. Pretty in Pink (1986)

Another gem starring Molly Ringwald, Pretty in Pink dove deep into class divides, teenage identity, and the courage it took to be yourself. With its memorable fashion, unforgettable soundtrack, and a love triangle that sparked an endless debate (Team Duckie or Team Blane?) This movie cemented Hughes’s reputation for understanding the teen soul.

What are your favorite John Hughes movies? Did we leave any off the list that you think deserve a spot?
