The Android’s New Soul is a classic tale of girl meets android; war kills almost everyone; girl reprograms android to be her boyfriend; things go awry. The 23 original songs were released on a 2-disc vinyl album in 2018 to rave reviews, and since then, new songs have been added, verses have been changed, and more surprises have crept in. So even the fans of the album will have new twists to look forward to. Check out the teaser trailer:
From its humble beginnings as a teenage dream to its evolution into a full-fledged rock opera, the journey of “The Android’s New Soul” is a testament to the enduring power of creativity and perseverance. Cain’s passion for storytelling, combined with a love for science fiction and rock music, forms the backbone of this epic saga. At its core, the musical explores themes of identity, consciousness, and what it truly means to be human. Set in a futuristic world where androids struggle to find their place in society, the narrative follows the journey of one such android as it embarks on a quest to discover its own soul.
Meet Dana Cain
Dana Cain has been a fixture in Denver’s cultural scene for decades, as the owner/operator of several popular festivals (Unicorn Festival, chocolate festivals, Cat Fest Colorado, Denver County Fair, Denver Modernism Show, etc). Her event business was launched from her decades of experience with science fiction conventions. The Android’s New Soul brings her full circle back to her core first loves: science fiction and music. Anyone who knows Dana Cain Events can count on a good time.
What makes this production truly remarkable is its origin story. Crafted by Dana Cain at the young age of 17 in 1974, this ambitious project has been incubating for five decades. Now, it’s finally ready to be unveiled to the world. According to Cain In 1974, we all thought rock operas would be a huge popular deal – forever. I was listening to Tommy, Jesus Christ Superstar, Phantom of the Paradise, Rocky Horror…and also tons of science fiction-themed stuff like David Bowie, Genesis, ELO, Hawkwind, Parliament/Funkadelic. I got this idea for a science fiction rock opera and started working on it.
Everyone laughs at high school poetry, Cain says. but I really love it. It’s so real and so raw. When you’re a teenager, the whole world is about your feelings — your incredibly new and strong emotions. You’re feeling all this stuff for the first time. First love, first heartbreak, first betrayal, first freedom. It’s so powerful! I’ve added new lyrics since then, and they may be more refined, but that original raw emotional content from the 70s is still front and center.
Get to Know Jeff LaGreca
Cain’s vision will come to life under the direction of New York-based maestro Jeff LaGreca. After a National Tour of Bye, Bye, Birdie, LaGreca cut his comedy teeth under the guidance of the Groundlings East, The Second City and Upright Citizens Brigade, working alongside original members Amy Poehler, Tina Fey, Matt Besser and Matt Walsh. He’s written and staged several Off-Broadway productions, including the award winning Minimum Wage (with executive producer Ken Dennison of The Lion King.) LaGreca wrote and directed a contemporary re-telling of Prokofiev’s (The Trial of) Peter and the (Were) Wolf for the Astoria Symphony and was also commissioned by them to adapt and direct his children’s story, The Gargoyle Garden, into a children’s opera which had its premiere at the Bleecker Street Theater in NYC. In association with the Gentile Entertainment Group, he wrote the book and lyrics to Bijou and the Bots, a new children’s musical being developed for theatrical production in New York. He’s worked and written in television with The Food Network, American Movie Classics and Nickelodeon and is currently adapting his newest book, The Pumpkin Kid, into a musical for the NYC stage. He plays in two nerd rock bands, H2Awesome! and Daenerys and the Targaryens.
It’s not just the compelling storyline that sets “The Android’s New Soul” apart. The production boasts a wealth of talent both on and off the stage. Under LaGreca’s expert guidance, a team of seasoned professionals has been assembled to bring this vision to fruition. From actors to musicians, set designers to choreographers, each member of the ensemble is dedicated to delivering something truly special.
As the curtain rises on September 6, theatergoers will be treated to a spectacle unlike any other. “The Android’s New Soul” is more than just a musical—it’s a testament to the power of imagination, the triumph of perseverance, and the universal quest for meaning in an ever-changing world. So mark your calendars, secure your tickets, and prepare to embark on an incredible journey. We’re excited to be some of the first to experience this, and you will be too.
“The Android’s New Soul” premieres Sept. 6 through the 15th at the Bug Theatre, 3654 Navajo St., Denver. More info and ticket purchase options for The Android’s New Soul are at www.DanaCainEntertainment.com
