New York Comic Con is one of the largest events to ever take place in North America, with last year over 18,000 people in attendance of the convention held in the Jacob Javits Center. The massive convention was held from October 4th-7th, 2018. When attending this convention, one knows that nothing is off limits and anything goes. This was such a unique and amazing community that was accepting and ready to let their nerd flag wave high.
This year there were many guests and panels, (way too many to name) like “The Walking Dead”, “Doctor Who”, “Superman” and more. Every which way you turned there was something amazing to see. With thousands of people in attendance, there was cosplay and celebrities and fans from wall to wall. Many different movies, television, comics and more were given a platform to speak to their fans in person. Although the name of the convention includes, “comic con” (and there were amazing comics), there were many other mediums of art. This a collection of amazing art that was shown off and appreciated by fans who are just as dedicated as the artist at hand. For someone who is new to this geek world, NYCC could be a bit daunting, packed in like sardines, life-size Groots walking the aisles; but for a veteran goer, it just like Christmas morning for four long fabulous days.
NYCC veteran, Xavier Anglada, spoke with Nerd Alert News to give us the rundown of this amazing entity.
Jadeen Mercado: Tell us about what has been your favorite experience this year at New York Comic Con?
Xavier Anglada: My favorite part of this year’s con experience is its diversity; in panels, new artists, projects, and all other content. They always strive for inclusion and I found that there were so many things that interested me that I could choose from.
JM: Why do you think New York Comic Con continues to have such an incredible turnout?
XA: I think they appeal to so many because they forward think. They not only cater to today’s trends they look to what tomorrow’s trend will be and give that glimpse to wet your whistle.
JM: What advice would you give to interested NYCC goers?
XA: The only advice is to be prepared and have a plan. Know where you are going and what is allowed. Know that Reed Pop (the organizers) has only a limited amount of control. Be courteous, know that everyone there is looking to have a great con experience too, so know that your actions will affect other people’s experiences. And do not be afraid to make friends. We are a great geek community.
This crazy four-day experience was geek central and is always striving towards the best new thing. Anyone interested should definitely bite the bullet and emerge themselves into this wonderfully crazy weekend.
Special thanks to ReedPop for organizing such an amazing event. Check their social media for information for next year’s convention.
