EXCELSIOR TRUE BELIEVERS! OVERVIEW

I have not ever covered a Role Playing Game (RPG) before, because they can be rules cumbersome and require a lot of explanation. The Marvel RPG however hits that spot between easy access and enough challenge to other gamers to enjoy. All that you need is the core rulebook, three 6-sided dice for each player, and 2 or more players.  It uses a Marvel created dice 616 system, where one die is the Marvel die (it’s recommended to use a different color die for your Marvel die) and is used as a multiplier for tests.

In the Marvel RPG you can play as one of over a 100 characters from the Marvel universe or create your own hero. The game is played with one player as the Narrator who runs the scenes that make up the story the heroes are in, and the rest play heroes in the Marvel Multiverse. As vast as the Multiverse is, the only limit to the game is your imagination.

ROLL THOSE DICE! Gameplay explanation

Each character has a sheet with basic statistics and is organized to see very easily.  The rulebook has detailed character sheets and a blank one you can copy to use in creating your own heroes.  There 6 main abilities; Melee, Agility, Resilience, Vigilance, Ego, and Logic. To make an action check, roll the dice, add the ability and match it to the target number (TN) provided by the Narrator. If the roll meets or beats the TN, the check is a success.  Action checks are used when a hero wants to perform an action that is a challenge. When a 1 or Marvel is rolled on the Marvel die, that’s a fantastic success and an additional bonus is awarded, such as double damage when attacking. The opposite of a fantastic success is a failure and that results in a complication. An example could be  Deadpool is shooting at a Hydra agent misses, but hits Red Skull instead, he fails his Target but still something good happened.

Rolls can also have an Edge or Disadvantage. An Edge allows you to reroll the lowest die of a test, while a Disadvantage forces a reroll of the highest die. Character sheets also include, powers, traits, tags, and narrative information about the hero.

The rulebook goes into detail about all of the powers, tags and traits that make up a hero. While the game is guided by the Narrator, the story is told between everyone.

WE NEED HEROES! FINAL THOUGHTS

This has to be one of the easiest entry point Role-Playing Games I have seen.  The d616 system is so intuitive and easy to follow. A lot of the game is storytelling with only rolls for action scenes or complex actions. There are no complex tables to reference and the character sheets do not look intimidating at all.

Almost every Marvel fan has wanted to step into the shoes of their favorite hero or create one of their own, and the Marvel Multiverse Role-Playing Game let’s you do just that. Until next time, keep moving those meeples and happy gaming!
