Ahsoka Tano is a character created by George Lucas and Dave Filoni over 15 years ago. She made her premiere in the 2008 The Clone Wars animated movie as the Padawan to Jedi Anakin Skywalker. After her original debut, she was not greeted with much enthusiasm, however, upon the conclusion of both The Clone Wars, animated series, and Star Wars Rebels she has become one of the most beloved characters in the Star Wars “galaxy”. Following her first live-action appearance in The Mandalorian, and more recently The Book of Boba Fett, we see Rosario Dawson taking the lead as the character in the self-titled Disney+ show Ahsoka, which premieres this coming Wednesday, Aug. 23, 2023.
After attending last night’s two-episode, cross-country fan premiere (which was held in place of a “proper” premier due to the SGA & writer’s strike), and as a long-time fan of Ahsoka Tano I did not walk away disappointed. Showrunner Dave Filoni has taken the animated series Rebels and brought it to life!

The premise of the story is first touched upon in season two of The Mandalorian: The quest to find Grand Admiral Thrawn (played by Lars Mikleson). Ahsoka must enlist the assistance of the former Ghost crew Hera Syndulla (Mary Elizabeth Winstead), who ironically, is married to Ewan McGregor known for his role as Obi-Wan Kenobi) and Sabine Wren (Natasha Liu Bordizzo) to find the location of Thrawn’s whereabouts. From the first scene, we are given a very Star Wars-eqse opening introducing two new characters, Baylan Skoll (played by the late Ray Stevenson) & Shin Hati (Ivan Sakhno) who appear to be Jedi. However, we quickly find out that this is not the case.
As someone who has followed Star Wars from the early days, I am not sure how a casual fan will feel stepping into this galaxy without taking the time to devote to the animated series. Which, in my personal opinion is some of the best Star Wars storytelling by far. There is definitely a sense of adventure and humor, of course, there are some great action sequences. If you love Star Wars, even if you sort of like it, I would highly recommend checking out this new series starting this Wednesday on Disney+.
