Apple TV has done it again—another sci-fi series that hooks from the very first frame. Pluribus premiered November 7th with a two-episode drop, and new episodes will land every Friday. With Vince Gilligan at the helm and Rhea Seehorn leading the cast, it’s clear that this show knows exactly what it’s doing. Seehorn stars as Carol, a romance novelist who, ironically, may be one of the most bitter, miserable people on the planet. That misery becomes more than just a personality trait—it becomes her survival advantage. A strange virus begins taking over the planet, turning ordinary people into dangerously euphoric, ridiculously cheerful versions of themselves. Carol, for reasons unknown, is immune. So while the world transforms into smiling and laughing chaos, Carol is left to navigate this apocalypse that she wants no part of.

If that sounds just a little like Invasion of the Body Snatchers, you’re not imagining things. Pluribus taps into that same eerie shift—when the people you know suddenly aren’t the people you know. But where Body Snatchers leaned into paranoia, Pluribus leans into dark humor. That distinctive Gilligan tone is all over the place, balancing dread with absurdity in a way that feels unsettling, smart, and, honestly, sometimes hilarious. The setting? Albuquerque, New Mexico—of course! Even though Gilligan isn’t actually from there (he’s from Richmond, Virginia), the desert feels like familiar territory for him, almost like a quiet character lurking in the background.
Seehorn is fantastic, and the supporting cast shines. Miriam Shor plays Carol’s manager—and love interest, Karolina Wydra (Europa Report, After) and Carlos-Manuel Vesga (The Hijacking of Flight 601, News of a Kidnapping) so far have amazed. Early reception has already exploded. Pluribus debuted with a 9.1 on IMDb and a perfect 100% on the Tomatometer. Apple TV clearly knows what it has, too—they’ve already ordered two seasons, with this first one running nine episodes.

The inciting incident is classic sci-fi wonder: the VLA (Very Large Array) in New Mexico detects a possible alien signal—finally, proof humanity has waited for. But the discovery doesn’t bring unity or enlightenment. Instead, not long after, a researcher is bitten by a rat, and a happiness virus begins its rapid, terrifying spread. It’s cheerful apocalypse by way of cosmic coincidence. Pluribus is sharp, bleakly funny, emotionally grounded, and deeply original. Sci-fi fans, Gilligan fans, and anyone who likes their dystopia with a side of uncomfortable laughter will find a lot to love here.
