First off, our hearts and thoughts are with all those affected by the fires in Los Angeles. It appears that the show must go on when it comes to the Oscars. The 2025 Oscar nominations are out and sci-fi enthusiasts have a lot to celebrate this year. It is always a treat when sci-fi films get the recognition they deserve from the Academy. From immersive worlds to groundbreaking visual effects, the sci-fi genre doesn’t always end up on the Oscar ballots. This year there are a few nods to the hard work and talent. “Dune: Part Two” richly deserves the Oscar nominations, and let’s take a closer look at the nominations that made the cut in this year’s Academy Awards.
Best Picture: Dune: Part Two

Denis Villeneuve’s Dune saga delivered an amazing part two and it has been nominated for Best Picture. The highly anticipated continuation of the saga takes audiences deeper into the conflict over the desert planet Arrakis. The powerful cast, gorgeous visual effects, directing, and music all came
Achievement in Cinematography: Dune: Part Two
As expected, “Dune: Part Two” continues its masterful cinematography. The film’s stunning desert landscapes, set designs, and amazing shots of the interstellar battles are just what we sci-fi fans expect. This nomination highlights how the sci-fi genre can push the boundaries of film photography, making the audience feel like they’re right there on Arrakis.
Achievement in Visual Effects: Dune: Part Two, Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes, and Alien: Romulus

Of course, sci-fi films receive nominations for Visual Effects. The talented crew that make this magic are masters of creating the effects for these movies. Thank you to the Academy that recognizes the incredible artistry behind visual effects in sci-fi. This year’s nominations include “Dune: Part Two” which continues to wow with its integration of CGI and practical effects. ”Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes” brings audiences the new chapter in the iconic franchise, with cutting-edge visual effects that I’ve even seen commercials use. “Alien: Romulus” deserved the nomination after the effects artists immersed viewers into the terrifying reaches of space.

Achievement in Sound: Dune: Part Two
The immersive sound design in “Dune: Part Two” is one of the most important parts of taking us to other worlds, and the rumble of those massive sandworms captured audiences. The sound design in this movie is basically a sensory experience and it earned a well-deserved nomination.
Writing (Adapted Screenplay): Dune: Part Two
The adaptation of Frank Herbert’s epic novel is no easy task, but “Dune: Part Two” has once again captured the essence of what Herbert was trying to get across to audiences. The political drama, human struggle against destiny, and the beautifully detailed world created in this movie all come together in this adapted screenplay.
