Meet Lesa Wilson. The talented actress known for her role as Bobbie Burman in CW’s “Stargirl” not only has new films coming out, she is trying to save the planet with her new show “Going Green.” After practically living out of suitcase because of the traveling and modeling that she was doing, Lesa ended became a semi-finalist on “American Idol.” Shortly after she landed her first acting role and never looked back. When possible, she can be found giving back to her community by planting trees and inspiring other through her YouTube show. Catch up with Lesa.
Colleen Bement: Hi Lesa. Thank you so much for taking the time out to chat with us. Let’s start out with “Stargirl.” Tell us about your character, Bobbie Burman.
Lesa Wilson: Hi! Thank you. I’m excited to chat with you. Yes, let’s chat “Stargirl!” Bobbie is a tortured soul. She’s a Stepford Wife but has no real contact with her husband, The Dragon King. She exists in the Burman family as a surrogate mother figure to Cindy who ultimately becomes Stargirl’s enemy. She’s always working to win Cindy’s approval. Without it, she could be erased from existence and replaced with a new and improved model. Given her position in the family, there isn’t an opportunity for Bobbie to form relationships with people outside of the home which in turn makes her feel very lonely. She looks the part of the perfect wife and mother but in reality, she’s completely broken and doing her best to hold it together.
CB: What is it like on the set of “Stargirl?” Do you already feel like a “family?”
LW: I do feel like I’m part of the Stargirl family. From the first table read, I felt like I mattered. Meg DeLacy and I connected immediately and started forming a friendship which was great considering how much time we spent together on set. Everyone in the cast and crew is incredibly supportive of one another. That was the first thing I noticed. It was wonderful. I’m a fan of everyone that’s a part of the production.
CB: Your new film “Coins For Love” comes out July 19th and gives your fans something new to look forward to. What can you share about this film?
LW: “Coins for Love” is a sequel to a film called “Coins for Christmas,” which is also on TV One. The story follows Madison (Essence Atkins), a single mother, and her boss Alec (Stephen Bishop). There’s the potential of love between them, but my character, Shellee, is running interference. She’s Alec’s ex-fiancé and has her sights set on winning him back. Madison’s ex-husband is also trying to get her back so there’s plenty of drama, some tears, family, love, and a heartwarming resolution.
CB: Looks like your fans are in for some romance in “Stars Fell on Alabama!” Tell us about the movie.
LW: “Stars Fell on Alabama” is a story about coming home. Bryce Dixon (James Maslow) leaves his Alabama hometown and becomes a big Hollywood agent then returns home 15 years later for his high school reunion. He’s embarrassed to show up without a date, so he hires his client, Madison Belle (Ciara Hanna) to play the role of his plus one for the weekend. He tricks all of his friends into thinking that Madison is his girlfriend but his plan unravels when her ex-boyfriend Zane Thomas (Zebedee Row) shows up. I play Rachel Kemnade, Bryce’s high school sweetheart. I’m really proud to be a part of this project. It’s family-friendly and we had the best time on set.
CB: Let’s chat Environmentalism. Going Green is very important to me. I strive every single day to make a difference and leave a small carbon footprint. I understand that you work with Environment Georgia and Trees Atlanta. Tell us about the work that you do, and tell us about your new weekly segment called “Going Green.”
LW: I first started noticing environmental issues about a year ago. It had never occurred to me to think much of it until I took a trip to the grocery store and suddenly noticed all the plastic bags holding literally every item in my cart. I don’t know why I hadn’t paid attention to it before, but on this particular day, I was really bothered by plastic. When I got home, I started researching and it opened my eyes to the massive issue we have with single-use plastics. Honestly, I was overwhelmed with all the environmental challenges that we should be concerned with so I decided to narrow my focus. My mission is spreading awareness and sharing small behavioral shifts people can make that have a massive impact on the environment. That’s what my show, “Going Green,” is about. The focus is on small changes that create a big impact. We can all make a difference with our individual choices!
Environment Georgia and Trees Atlanta are two organizations that have great volunteer opportunities for people looking to get involved. I like to volunteer for their events. Sometimes it’s clean up projects and other times its tree planting. It feels good to give back to the community in that way.
