“Steven Universe: Future” is a limited epilogue series serving to wrap up loose ends that could not be properly addressed in the series proper, “Steven Universe.” The final ten episodes aired on March 6th with episodes 11 and 12 titled ‘In Dreams” and “Bismuth Casual”, respectively.
“In Dreams” starts with the titular character, Steven, having what he later states as another nightmare hinting that they are recurring. These worries are quickly pushed aside when he is visited by one of his friends, Peridot, who is there to watch a TV program in the show proper called Camp Pining Hearts. Not long into watching this new episode of CPH, Peridot and Steven find that the new season is not as they expected as it throws in new characters and plots seemingly out of nowhere, so they band together to try rewriting it using Steven’s dream powers, Peridot ignoring Steven’s concerns with his nightmares, but he agrees to help anyway. After writing a script together the dream sequence starts off normally, but then pieces of nightmares start to blend in toward the end and continue to grow worse with every attempt he tries to get the dream sequence correct. Much later in the episode, we are greeted with one of Steven’s insecurities that have been fueling the epilogue series: his friends are moving on with their lives and he feels like he is not needed anymore. Peridot quickly calls off their project to rewrite CPH Andrea sure Stephan that they don’t need excuses to hang out, the Peridot still wants him around.
The following episode, “Bismuth Casual” opens up with Steven, Connie, Pearl, and Bismuth who are on their way to a roller rink to help Bismuth learn how to communicate, and make friends with, humans. As this is going on with the help of Pearl, Steven and Connie run into a few of Connie’s other friends, which throws Steven off since his introduction with them goes, awkwardly, wrong. As Connie goes skating with these other friends, Steven just convinced that she would rather hang out with them and him because it seems like he and Connie are no longer connecting. After a talk with Bismuth, who reminds him that Connie has always accepted him for his quirks of being half human and half gem, Steven confesses to Connie that he still wants to be friends and just doesn’t know how to continue doing that since he doesn’t know how to skate, along with not being normal since he is half gem. Connie reassures him before a contest is announced that inspires her on how to show Steven they are still friends; on the dance floor of the skating rink the two end up fusing into a combination of the two, which symbolizes their connection, named Stevonnie. Afterward, this leads to Connie’s friends wanting to get to know more about Steven while Bismuth has successfully made friends of her own as she set out to do since the beginning of the episode.
The next two episodes of “Steven Universe: Future” airs Friday night, March 13, 2020, at 7:00 and 7:15 EST on Cartoon Network. Stay tuned for our next episode reviews!
