The latest episode of “Supernatural” to air, ‘Absence’, had a major plot twist. SPOILERS AHEAD.
“Mary Winchester is complete” was the line we heard at the end of the episode that left us with solace. Before this episode, we saw Jack was struggling with the absence of a soul, but we had no idea something this bad would happen. The episode began with us seeing Jack falling off the deep end, really losing a sense of reality when he started hallucinating that Lucifer was there. The viewers still were not sure what happened to Mary, but sadly later in the episode, it became all too clear.
When the episode moved to capture the boys they were not initially panicking about the missing boy and their mother until Cas shared with them that Jack no longer had a soul. The brothers began to realize that something bad could have happened to Mary and they enlist the help of Rowena. Fan’s favorite witch told them that she could not sense Mary on this earth. The boys began to unravel with that news. Dean became very upset with Cas, blaming him for not warning them about Jack. Sam, as usual, remained pretty level headed, understanding that this was not Cas’s fault, and technically not even Jack’s.
Jack was reeling from accidentally killing Mary. He was upset and kidnapped Rowena in hopes of her bringing Mary back. The audience witnessed a softer side of Rowena, with her mourning her friend’s death. Throughout all of this, the episode was giving us flashbacks with the characters and their interactions with Mary, giving the audience finality of the character.
Sadly Rowena was not able to bring Mary back. Jack tried and he failed, and he disappeared leaving the boys with just a body to burn. Cas was still feeling guilty, but he made his way into heaven to see Mary’s own personal heaven. He eventually came back to tell the boys that she was okay, and was in heaven with John. Her death was instant and painless. This gave some comfort to her grieving sons.
The episode ended with the boys giving her a hunter’s funeral. The last thing the audience saw was the boys beside the pyre and Cas moving towards Dean, but Sam stopping him from making contact with Dean. He was simply protecting Cas from Dean’s wrath since he was so upset, while also letting Cas know it was okay, and at the same time giving him comfort.
What a send-off this was to Mary, though this episode in a way felt impersonal as an audience member. It was like the audience didn’t get to say goodbye to Mary because she was already gone, but then again, the boys didn’t get that either. Mary helped her sons grow after being brought back by Amara at the end of season 11. This will be a hard death for the boys, but they are strong. It was sad to see Jack being made into the bad guy, hopefully, this season can end without his death. With only two episodes left, it can only get scarier. Tune in next week for the second to last episode of season 14 of “Supernatural.”
