“Supernatural” is back from its midseason hiatus and they hit us hard with the return of the show. This week’s episode, ‘The Trap’, gave the audience some crazy twists that hurt us, and the boys.
Spoilers ahead!
Before the midseason finale, we saw that God showed up to ambush Sam and Eileen. He had them tied to chairs. This wasn’t going well. God knew that something was up. He brought them there to mess with them and try to put a stop to their plans. Chuck revealed that he was the one who got Sam and Eileen back together by putting her in his path, using her as his “eyes on the inside” as he put it. Chuck admitted that he and Sam were connected by the wound and oddly, he removed it with a scalpel.
Back at the bunker, Dean and Cas were getting ready to make the trip to purgatory. Dean repeatedly called Sam with no answer and started to realize that something was wrong; though of course while still continuing to get ready.
Chuck revealed that he was going to cut the wound out of Sam and Eileen managed to get her phone to call Dean while her phone was in her pocket. Of course, God being omniscient realized what she had done and quickly confiscated the phone before saying hello to Dean.
Dean, of course, was worried and tried to go after Sam, but Cas told him that the only way to really help Sam was to go get the ingredients for the spell to trap God. They both ran off to purgatory. It was nostalgic to see purgatory again on the screen.
Chuck tried to cut the bullet out of Sam but was stalling. Sam called him out for not being able to do his own dirty work. Chuck, who was now embarrassed, started controlling Eileen’s body and used her to cut Sam. It was quite cruel to see her say no but not be able to stop her own body. Extracting the bullet by hand did not work. Sam tried to start talking his way out of the situation. God sends Eileen off to clean herself, which we can only imagine as mind control hand washing. Chuck decided this was a good time to play some guitar which was a nice tribute to Rob Benedict. God then questioned to find out why Sam he was so defiant and realized he had hope.
While in purgatory Dean and Cas meet a leviathan that tried to kill them, and they used him to guide them to the lotus plant they need. While on their way walking, Dean asked the leviathan about Benny. The leviathan said that Benny was a legend. Shortly after he stated that Benny was dead. His kind not longer trusted him anymore and ripped him apart. Dean was sad, as we were. They get to the lotus plants but realized it was actually an angel trap. Dean gets knocked out while Cas was captured and taken to Eve.
Chuck started telling Sam how his hope was misplaced, started to show him the future without God. Everyone they love was dead. They even turned into monsters and died. It was a horrible future and Sam believed Chuck. We were treated to a sad cameo from Jody Mills showing the realistic future.
Dean woke up and started looking for Cas and decided to pray to him. It became an apology to his best friend. He apologized for the way that he had treated him, the emotion is real and raw. Dean finally catches up with Cas and they make it out with the lotus plant, they are able to build the spell. Though a major caveat is Cas will need to take the Mark of Cain.
Dean and Cas storm in to save Eileen and Sam but Sam tells them not to use the spell. He falls to his knees, the bullet hole is gone and God revealed that Sam lost hope, that’s how they healed up. God tells them that that will be their future if they don’t stop, but Dean tells him no, that will not happen. Just like that, Chuck is gone again.
Eileen packed up to leave, sighting that she didn’t know what was real and needed time. Sam kissed her so sweetly and told her that this was real. They said goodbye. The boys chat and accepted that they will need to find a new way to beat God. At the end of the episode, we saw Jack awake in the empty with Billy telling him that it was time.
Who knows where this season will go next, but hopefully Jack will be back. Stay tuned on NerdAlertNews for more “Supernatural” news.
