Last night’s Season 14 premiere of “Supernatural” was a hit! Be warned, spoilers ahead… if you have not seen the episode, DO NOT READ.
Now that that’s out of the way, it is time talk about the episode. The episode begins with Michael/Dean reaching out to a human to ask “What do you want?”. This beginning scene is crucial because it is the first real interaction with Michael where his storyline begins to form. Next viewers get to see the bunker filled with all the other world’s refugees, talking about kills they had just completed, and a dangerous nomadic group of vamps moving in their direction.
Sam has been thrown into the leader role while simultaneously working tirelessly to find his brother. It is a common theme throughout “Supernatural” where one brother needs saving, while the other almost dies trying to save him. It should be interesting to see how this plays out.
While at the bunker we see Jack learning how to box with the help of other world Bobby. Jack now needs to adjust to life as a mortal, and it appears as though it is going to prove difficult. While the group at the bunker is moseying along, Cas is out meeting up with a demon to gain information about Dean: Shockingly it turns out to be a trap. The douchie “Crowley” want-to-be, name is not important, calls Sam and demands he come and find a now beat up Castiel.
Also side note, what is up with Cas getting the crap beaten out of him in the first episode?
Sam, Mary, Bobby, Jack and the young hunter, Maggie from the other world head out to the very clear trap in Hope’s of getting Cas back. While the demon is talking to Cas he says that the reason he is doing this is because he has become enlightened since someone asked him, “What do you want’?”. It isn’t explored in this scene, but that heavily implies that he was reached by Michael/Dean.
When the Cas rescue team reaches the bar, an amazing fight scene ensues. We see Mary and Bobby coming in guns blazing with Jack and Maggie doing their best to help; all the while Sam is dealing with the main demon. The fight scene was way too epic to describe with words, it was one of the best “Supernatural” has ever produced.
The group eventually prevails with Sam killing the douchie demon and proclaiming to the group “There will be no new king of hell”. This rightfully scares all the Demons away, and they take Cas home. While this was happening, Michael/Dean found Jo (Annael) and asked her what she wanted, after she responded with her normal snarkiness, Michael retorted and called her very human like. Jo was visibly shaken from the encounter and eventually calls sam to tell him what happened.
When episode was coming to an end we see Jack struggling to accept his new role. He isn’t a strong being anymore; he is a human learning it all. Cas has a heart to heart with him, telling him he has a family who will help him through it. Sam and Mary had a tough conversation about having hope about Dean and being realistic, and it seems this will be a hard arc for these characters to go through.
Finally, the last thing we see is Michael/Dean talking to vamp and realizing that “what he wants” is simple: The vampires just want to feed.
So what does this mean for what Michael wants? Is he trying to build an army? Does he still want to destroy our world? Also what will happen now with the dynamic in the bunker now that Sam has an army of his own? How will Jack adjust to his new life, will Cas and Sam really be there for him enough?
Oh, and one last thing… Mary and Bobby…
Stay tuned for next week’s episode, though the CW failed to actually air previews, this season is sure to a be wild ride.
