“Supernatural” killed a lot of people during its third episode by ripping their hearts out, and we haven’t even gotten to the dead characters yet. This episode began the savage murderous spree of beloved characters this season. SPOILERS AHEAD!
After the last two episodes, we knew that containing the released ghosts from Hell was the big bad and main priority so far. But we didn’t know who we would lose along the way. Belphagor gave a suggestion to close the whole which involved him and “muscle” going to hell to retrieve a horn that would call the souls back to Hell. This of course came after Rowena’s first spell failed due to the sheer power of the ghosts. The boys all agreed to Belphagor’s idea; all but Cas who was basically thrown into Hell by Dean alongside Belphegor. Cas wasn’t too happy about going, but nobody cared.
We knew something was up with Rowena when she started reading the spellbook and got a weird look on her face and she basically forced Sam to be her helper. Which of course meant something bad would happen. While this was going on, Team Free Will lost another soldier. A demon who was after Belphagor, the one that sent Ketch, unfortunately, caught Ketch when he tried to leave the hospital. He was still recovering from his gunshot, not at full strength and sadly lost the fight. His heart was ripped right out of him because, in that moment, Ketch finally found his heart and wouldn’t give up the Winchesters. One down.
Belphagor and Cas reach Lilith’s chamber where the horn is located and realize that the only way to free the horn was reciting a song in Enochian, Cas had to actually sing. Sadly we were jipped of that pure sound but Belphagor did say he sounded like an angel. Unfortunately, the bad demon shows up and we learn a few things, she is trying to stop Belphagor because he is trying to take over Hell. She gets killed and Belphagor comes clean, he is trying to suck up all of the souls in Hell to become a God. Cas eventually gets the upper hand to stop him and he winds up killing him, but for Cas he felt like he was killing Jack. Two down.
Rowena realized Belphagor’s plan wasn’t working, it was time for her plan B. Her final spell, a simple one she said to shut the whole, but it needed her. Her last breath, and as we know from the prophecy, Sam has to be the one to kill her. He realizes and begs her to not do this, an emotional stand-off ensued, it was heartbreaking to watch a bond between two people end. Sam didn’t do it until she said, “will you let your brother die to save me”. He stabs her, she finishes the spell, Rowena turns and says her last words, “Goodbye boys.” Three down.
When all is said and done, Sam is recovering the bunker and Dean tells him about Ketch. But Dean is being really non-nonchalant of it all and even saying that was the last apocalypse God threw at them when everyone else knows it will never be that easy.
Then Cas and Dean start to speak and it goes terribly. Dean has been nothing but cruel to Cas, lastly volunteering him for Hell with knowing he may not return. Cas says to Dean “you still blame me for Mary.” Their relationship is really terrible right now, Cas has never been treated well and decides that it’s time for him to move on from the Winchester’s and he leaves.
Two deaths and one, re-death and a big goodbye. What will be next? This season has already broken our hearts, we can only imagine what will be next. “Supernatural” will return on November 7th, stay tuned on Nerd Alert News for more.
