Have you ever wondered what it is like behind the scenes of a major pop culture convention? Con-goers know all too well that some events are run like well-oiled machines, and some are shit-shows. This new documentary shows just how difficult it is to put on an event. “Surviving Supercon” is an eye-opening and entertaining documentary that takes the viewer behind the scenes of the large Florida convention. Directed and edited by Steven Shea, this insider look at the production follows husband and wife owners Mike Broder and Sandy Martin as they do everything they can to keep 60,000 people happy.
The film covers everything from how to attract attendees, how to train people to tell the difference between a prop and a weapon, and how to entertain people at every hour of the day and night. Witness the moments of producing a live event, whether they are magical or stressful. Watch what happens when one of the organizers tries her best to handle that stress with a large crowd of excited fans. This is truly a documentary that shows the ups and downs, and what Sandy describes as “some wacky shit going on.”
It includes a very heartfelt and emotional moment when a fan describes how much “Supercon” means to him after witnessing the Parkland Shooting. He thanked the organizers for the support that they gave to his school, and just how much it meant to them to be able to just be teenagers. Leaving the real world behind for a weekend, or even a day, can mean the world too many fans.
“Surviving Supercon” is now available on VOD, On Demand, DVD, and Blu-ray. Check out the trailer.
