The highly anticipated rock opera “The Android’s New Soul” opened Friday night to a sold out and energetic crowd.
The Bug Theatre was rocking last Friday. “The Android’s New Soul” enjoyed its opening night. From the charm of this eclectic little venue to the passion and talent of the entire team, the vibe was electric. Friends came with flowers and congratulations ready to witness the opening of this amazing sci-fi rock opera, and no one left disappointed. The production was nothing short of fabulous. It was obvious that the cast and crew put their hearts and soul into this adventure. Speaking of the cast, WOW! The talented actors brought their best. Especially the stars, Suzanne Slade-LaGreca and Matthew Combs. My attention never wandered–not for a second!
What a thrill this must have been for its creator, Dana Cain, to see her vision materialize. At just 17 she created this story after being inspired by other rock operas such as “Tommy,” “Jesus Christ Superstar,” and “Rocky Horror Picture Show.” There needed to be a sci-fi rock opera and how lucky was Denver to get to be the first to experience it. Cain is known for her festivals and has been putting on events in the Denver cultural scene for decades. Chances are you’ve been to one. The Unicorn Festival, chocolate festivals, Cat Fest Colorado, Denver County Fair, and Denver Modernism Show.
And none of this would have happened without the director, Jeff LaGreca. This New York-based maestro has written and staged several Off-Broadway productions. He got his start under the guidance of the Groundlings East, The Second City, and Upright Citizens Brigade, and has worked alongside Amy Poehler, Tina Fey, Matt Besser, and Matt Walsh.
I hope this production returns to The Bug Theatre or travels to another venue in the future. It’s just so much fun and needs to be shared with everyone.
“The Android’s New Soul” runs Sept. 6 through the 15th at the Bug Theatre, 3654 Navajo St., Denver. More info and ticket purchase options for The Android’s New Soul are at www.DanaCainEntertainment.com
