“Call of the Wild”
A review
Not many movies have you laughing seconds after you’ve been crying, but this one does. It tugs on the heartstrings and shows us a wildness we’ll want to escape to.
Released worldwide on the 20th of February “Call of the Wild” stars Harrison Ford (Star Wars, Indiana Jones) and even “Supernatural” favorite Adam Fergus had a part. Based on the 1903 short novel by Jack London, Call of the Wild follows the adventures of Buck, a kind-hearted dog.
Buck is living the good life in California when he is stolen by James, played by Adam Fergus, who has seen an advert in the paper about dogs being needed for the Klondike Goldrush. Money for dogs is a hard thing to pass up.
Buck soon finds himself the newest member of a mail delivery dog sled team. Under the careful eye of Perrault and Francoise (played by Omar Sy and Cara Gee), Buck finds his inner pack leader.
John Thornton has a tragic backstory, unlike in the book. His son has passed away and he is trying to get as far away from his grief and civilisation as he can. His path crosses infrequently with Buck before fate finally leads them together and we see Thornton rescue Buck from the greedy ignorant Hal.
The connection between man and beast is clear from the very first moment Buck and Thornton meet, and you ache for Buck as he longs to embrace his wild side, but refuses to abandon his friend.
This movie is one for the whole family, although small children might struggle with some of the scenes towards the end.
“Call of the Wild” shows us why dogs are man’s best friend.
